OU Urges Florida
Religious Funding
WASHINGTON (JTA) — The
Orthodox Union is asking Florida
voters to pass a 2012 ballot that
would repeal a measure banning
funding of religious institutions.
"It's long past time Florida's
faith-based community was on
equal footing with other non-
profits across the state:' said a
statement May 6 from the umbrel-
la group, praising the Florida
legislature for placing the "Blaine
Amendment" repeal on the ballot.
A number of states passed such
amendments in the late 19th cen-
tury. They were named for a Maine
congressman, James Blaine, who
sought separation of church and
state.
A number of anti-Catholic
Protestants latched onto his
amendment as a means of thwart-
ing expansion of the Roman
Catholic Church.
The Orthodox Union and others
seeking repeal of Blaine amend-
ments have focused on the anti-
Catholic fervor in its origins to
persuade legislatures to repeal it.

Vanunu Wants
Citizenship Revoked
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Mordechai
Vanunu, who served 18 years in
prison for leaking Israel's nuclear
secrets, has asked that his Israeli
citizenship be revoked.
The request is related to a law
passed by Israel's Knesset in
March under which those convict-
ed of treason can lose their right
to retain their Israeli citizenship.
Vanunu was convicted in 1988 of
treason and espionage.
In a letter sent to Israel's
Interior Minister Eli Yishai, and
released to the media over the
weekend, Vanunu asked that his
citizenship be stripped on the
basis of the Citizenship Revocation
Law.
"After the treatment and 'care'
which I got from this country and
its citizens, I cannot feel myself
a wanted citizen here;' Vanunu
wrote.
Vanunu was jailed for discussing
details of his work as a Dimona
technician with the Sunday Times
of London. He reportedly revealed
Israeli nuclear secrets and gave
the newspaper photographs of the
plant's operation.
Under the terms of his parole,
Vanunu is prohibited from leaving
the country or approaching for-
eign embassies.
