Family Tales

Opening in movie theaters Friday,
May 13, is Hesher, a nominee for
the 2010 Sundance Grand Jury
Prize and the first film produced
by Natalie Portman's production
company. It's also the first feature
for director-writer
Spencer Susser,
34.
The film centers
on 13-year-old T.J.
(Devin Brochu).
After the tragic
loss of his mother,
T.J. and his pill-
Spencer
popping father
Susser
(Rainn Wilson)
are forced to live with T.J.'s elderly
grandmother (Piper Laurie, 79).
Enter Hesher (Joseph Gordon-
Levitt, 30), a "bad-ass"-looking
drifter with a lot of tattoos and a
troubled past. He sometimes men-
tors T.J. and sometimes gets him in
trouble.
A young grocery clerk (Portman,
29) steps in to protect T.J. and
becomes the object of his fanta-
sies. Meanwhile, Hesher moves into
Grandma's home and proceeds to
shake the family out of their torpor.
Susser told the Jewish Journal
of Greater L.A. that Gordon-Levitt
had to work hard to convince him he
could play Hesher. He said: "In many
ways, [the actor] is the opposite of
Hesher he's like this nice Jewish
boy."

A very different family — the
British royals — invited an unlikely
Jewish matchmaker to the recent
royal wedding between Prince
William and Kate Middleton.
His name is Sam Waley-Cohen,
and he is a top U.K. amateur jock-
ey. Sam's father is a major race-
horse owner and the founder of a
very successful diagnostic imag-
ing company. His paternal grandfa-
ther and great-grandfather, who were
both knighted, also were successful
businessmen.
In 2007, Whaley-Cohen invited
Prince William and Kate Middleton to
a party at his family's mansion.
The couple
had been
broken up
for months,
but they
reconnected
romantically
at the party
and the rest is
Waley-Cohen
history.
and Kate Middleton
Most
sources say that Waley-Cohen, 28,
was taking too little credit when he
recently told Yahoo News: "I don't
know for sure if I had anything to do
with it. They have both been friends
of mine for a long time, and they
make a fantastic couple.... Wherever
it happened, I like to think they got
back together of their own accord,
and we are all delighted that they
did." Li
