SPECIALISTS
ore teams, more games, more
fun, more opportunities for
Jewish brotherhood and fel-
lowship, and a new Facebook page.
That's what's in store for the 16th sea-
son of the Inter-Congregational Men's
Club Summer Softball League.
Twelve teams will compete. That's
two more than the previous high of 10.
Each team will play a double-header on
Sunday mornings at Keith Elementary
School in West Bloomfield before the
two-week playoffs.
The season will begin May 22 and con-
tinue every week (except for Memorial
Day weekend and July 4) until Aug. 21.
"Guys were asking to play more games,
so we're doing it',' said Howard Rosner,
who plays for two-time defending league
champion Temple Shir Shalom.
Managers will select their team stars
each week, and they'll be honored on the
league's Facebook page.
Play actually will begin this Sunday,
May 15, when players who make a
donation will be split into teams for
exhibition games.
"The money will go to Jewish chari-
ties',' Rosner said. "We're also getting
donations from shul brotherhood funds."
Shir Shalom, which lost just one game
the last two seasons, went 11-1 during
the regular season last year and it defeat-
ed Temple Kol Ami 16-8 in the playoff
championship game.
Temple Beth El (8-3-1), Kol Ami (7-5),
Congregation Shaaray Zedek (6-5-1),
Temple Israel No. 1 (6-6), Congregation
Beth Ahm (5-6-1), Adat Shalom
Synagogue and Keter Torah (5-7), Bais
Chabad Torah Center (3-9) and Temple
Israel No. 2 (2-9-1) trailed Shir Shalom in
the regular-season standings.
All 10 teams will return this season.
Rosner said Adat Shalom will field a sec-
ond team, and a team from Ann Arbor
will join the league.

Team Select's flag football winners: Al Broida, Dan Yaker, Adam Ellis, Eric
Michaels, Rick Krause and Matt Levin. Not shown is David Huntley.
Flag Day
Parity came to the Jewish Football
League this spring. Only two
games separated the four teams in the
regular-season standings.
Team Select went 4-2 and won the
playoff championship in the flag football
league. Team Novak and Team Jacobs each
was 3-3, and the Chai Flyers were 2-4.
After beating Team Novak 63-0 dur-
ing the regular season, Team Select got a
much better fight in the title game before
winning 40-26.
"We knew they'd be fired up to play
us," said Team Select member Adam Ellis.
"Everything was clicking for us in that
earlier game, and nothing went right for
them:"
Team Select quarterback Dan Yaker
threw five touchdown passes and ran
for another score in the championship
game. Matt Levin and Ellis each caught
two TD passes, and Al Broida grabbed
the other one.
Eric Michaels played well defensively for
Team Select, but it came at a price. He was
accidentally kicked in the mouth while
grabbing the flag on a Team Novak player
and a couple of his teeth were chipped.
Rick Krause and David Huntley also
were on the Team Select roster.
Team Novak quarterback Mike
Finkelstein threw three touchdown pass-
es and ran for a TD in a losing cause.
Thirty players participated in the
league for Jewish men age 30 and older.
They were drafted onto teams. Games
were played on four Sundays, mostly at
North Farmington High School.
Players interested in participating in
the JFL's fall season and prospective team
sponsors can contact Ellis at
