Violent Neo-Nazism
Rising In Germany
BERLIN (JTA) — Violent neo-
Nazism is on the rise in Germany,
according to an annual report by the
German government.
The report on extremism by the
Federal Office for the Protection of
the Constitution also said that the
proponents of violent neo-Nazism
are rejecting organized political par-
ties.
According to the report, the num-
ber of neo-Nazis with violent ten-
dencies rose by 10 percent last year,
to 5,600.
Heinz Fromm, head of the agency
that produces the report, told the
Neuen Osnabrucker Zeitung news-
paper that the increase should be
seen as a warning, though mem-
bership in the far-right National
Democratic Party (NPD) of Germany
has dropped to 6,600 and the total
number of those identifying as
right-wing extremists dropped from
31,000 in 2009 to 25,000 in 2010.
Meanwhile, a court in Koblenz
jailed nine neo-Nazis for broadcast-
ing racist and anti-Semitic propa-
ganda via Radio Resistance. The sta-
tion was shut down last November.
The sentences ranged from 21
months to three years. Nine others
were given suspended sentences.
Ukrainian Synagogue
Vandalized Again
MOSCOW (JTA) — Vandals struck
the synagogue in a northeastern
Ukraine city for the fifth time in as
many years.
Late in the evening on April 4, two
cans of red paint were splashed on
the walls of the synagogue in Sumy,
the chairman of the city's Jewish
community, Aleksander Goron, told
the Union of Councils for Jews in the
former Soviet Union. The synagogue
was also attacked three months ago.
U.S. Says Iran
Aiding Syria Crackdown
WASHINGTON (JTA) — Iran report-
edly is providing material assistance
to the Syrian government in its effort
to quell protests.
Obama administration officials say
they have intelligence showing that
Iran is providing the Assad regime in
Syria with know-how garnered from
its own civilian uprising in 2009 to
shut down electronic communica-
tions among dissenters, and with
equipment to put down protests.
Additionally, U.S. intelligence has
intercepted "chatter" suggesting that
the Iranians are seeking avenues to
assist Shi'ites in Bahrain and Yemen
in their bids to force government
change.
