Law School Criticized
On Palestinian Event
SAN FRANCISCO (JTA) — A Bay Area law
school is under fire for withdrawing its sup-
port of a Palestinian rights conference on
its campus.
Officials at the University of California at
Hastings College of the Law revealed that
they had made a last-minute decision to
remove the school's name from "Litigating
Palestine," a conference devoted to using the
courts to promote Palestinian rights.
At a March 24 meeting, the school's
board of directors also canceled a welcom-
ing speech by the university dean scheduled
for the next morning, when the two-day
conference opened.
The decision followed a March 21 meet-
ing between the board and representatives
of the Anti-Defamation League and San
Francisco's Jewish Community Relations
Council, both of which asked the school to
withdraw its sponsorship and cancel the
dean's speech.
Rabbi Doug Kahn, the JCRC's executive
director, told school officials that the con-
ference was one-sided and "an anti-Israel
political organizing conference using law as
a weapon."
UC Hastings Professor George Bisharat,
a conference organizer, said the criticism
was misguided, that it was a conference to
train lawyers on how to defend Palestinian
rights, not a political gathering to debate
those rights.
"If you had a conference on Holocaust
reparation cases, you wouldn't include
Holocaust deniers," Bisharat told reporters.
Nearly all the university's tenured profes-
sors signed a letter protesting the board's
decision, according to the San Jose Mercury
News. The directors, who are appointed by
the governor of California, had no com-
ment.
Migrant Mothers
Can Stay In Israel
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel's Interior
Ministry cannot deport migrant workers
three months after they have given birth,
the country's Supreme Court ruled.
According to the voided regulation, a
migrant worker who is residing legally
in Israel will lose her permit should she
become pregnant or give birth; and she
must leave the country and may only return
without her newborn.
Justice Ayala Procaccia wrote, "Forcing
a woman to choose between her employ-
ment, while realizing her legitimate eco-
nomic expectations, and her right to moth-
erhood, does not settle with the ethical and
legal-constitutional perceptions of Israeli
society!'
The current regulation, said the verdict,
"is infringing on the foreign worker's con-
stitutional right to parenthood."
In 2005, the petition against the regula-
tion was submitted by the Association
for Civil Rights in Israel, Kay Laoved,
Hotline for Migrant Workers, Naamat and
Physicians for Human Rights-Israel.
Last month, Israel began deporting
migrant workers residing illegally in Israel.
Two women from the Philippines and their
two babies were arrested and taken to a
detainment facility at Ben-Gurion Airport.
They were deported less than three days
later.
Bibi Halts Talks
On East Jerusalem
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Discussions on new
construction in eastern Jerusalem have
been postponed, reportedly due to pressure
from the Prime Minister's Office.
The Jerusalem District Planning and
Building Committee tabled its talks sched-
uled for last week on projects to build
nearly 1,000 apartments in Har Homa and
600 in Pisgat Ze'ev until May 5, Haaretz
reported.
Discussions on building 942 housing
units in the Gilo neighborhood and another
180 in Ramot also were postponed, accord-
ing to Ynet.
The move came ahead of a meeting of
the Mideast Quartet — the United States,
European Union, Russia and the United
Nations.
Rabbis Involved
In Molestation Case
NEW YORK (JTA) — A Brooklyn rabbi was
arrested and is facing charges of perjury in
a child molestation case involving another
rabbi.
Rabbi Samuel Kellner, who was arrested
April 12, is accused of paying a witness in
the case of Rabbi Baruch Lebovits, who was
sentenced to up to 32 years in prison for a
child molestation conviction. Kellner sup-
posedly paid to have the witness say that he
also was abused by Lebovits, according to
several reports.
On April 14, the appellate division of the
New York State Supreme Court ruled that
Lebovits should be freed from prison on
bail and remain under house arrest pend-
ing the outcome of his appeal.
Kellner is accused of trying to extort
more than $400,000 from Lebovits after
hearing that another youth had made sexu-
al abuse charges against the rabbi.
