Ready To Laugh?

Adat Shalom's SYNergy Shabbat
welcomes stand-up comedian.

A

dat Shalom Synagogue will
welcome comedian and
author Joel Chasnoff in a
presentation following the Synagogue's
SYNergy Shabbat dinner on Friday, May
13.
Joel Chasnoff is not your grandfa-
ther's Jewish comedian. With humor
that's clever, sharp and never degrading,
his comedy is a 180-degree turn from
the Borscht Belt comics of old.
Chasnoff is a stand-up comedian and
writer with stage and screen credits
in eight countries. On tour, he was the
warm-up act for Jon Stewart and Lewis
Black of The Daily Show. He recently
returned from a USO Comedy Tour of
Japan and Korea entertaining American
Marines. He's supplied his voice to
numerous cartoons and has performed
at more than 500 colleges, clubs and
Jewish conferences worldwide.
Chasnoff's book, The 188th Crybaby
Brigade: A Skinny Jewish Kid from
Chicago Fights Hezbollah, is a hilarious
and poignant account of his service in
the Israeli Armored Corps. A portion of
all proceeds from his book and stand-
up performances is donated to his
charitable foundation, Project Elijah,
which benefits low-income New York
City schoolchildren.
Friday evening programming will
begin at 6 p.m. with a Shabbat Rocks
service. Marty Liebman and Dan Shere
will co-lead the instrumental service
with Rabbi Aaron Bergman and Hazzan
Dan Gross.
At the same time, there will be a

camp-style teen service and schmooze
with Joel Chasnoff.
The casual Shabbat buffet will begin
at 7:15 p.m.
Childcare will start at 7:30 p.m. and
extend until the end of the adult pro-
gram. At 8:15 p.m., children will enjoy a
presentation by Cirque Amongus.
A young adult afterglow planned by
the Adat Shalom Young Adult Group
will start at 9:30 p.m. There will be an
open bar and readings by Chasnoff.
Traditional services will begin at 9
a.m. on Shabbat morning. At 10 a.m.,
Bergman will hold a study session titled
What Are God's Names? A Kabbalistic
Approach To Understanding God and
the Universe. Rabbi Rachel Shere will
conduct an 11 a.m. study session on
Buddhism and Judaism: Zen with a
Yiddish Heart. Junior Congregation
and Tots & Torah begins at 10:15 a.m.
Following morning services, there will
be an enhanced Kiddush.
SYNergy Shabbat weekends were devel-
oped to offer "something for everyone" —
a concept that encourages individuals to
enhance their celebration of Shabbat with
a variety of new, creative experiences.
Chairing this year's SYNergy pro-
gramming is Karen Kahn of West
Bloomfield. Beth Rodgers of Oak Park
chairs the Young Adult Group.
The weekend is open to the com-
munity at no charge, except for Shabbat
dinner. Dinner reservations are
