Sil ent Epidemic Kadima fundraiser focuses on the truths about youth suicide.

eynote speaker Clark
Flatt, president/CEO of the
Tennessee-based Jason
Foundation, presented information
and statistics on the "silent epi-
demic" of youth suicide at Kadima's
"Healthy Body Healthy Mind" fun-
draiser luncheon on April 28. The
event benefited Kadima's Child and
Adolescent Program and its Miya Jo
Must home.
National data from the Center
for Disease Control in 2009 shows
more than 100 youth will die each
week due to the "silent epidemic" of
youth suicide. That's one youth sui-
cide every 105 minutes in the U.S.
In Michigan, suicide is the
10th leading cause of death or 2.9
suicides every day for adults and
youth. Projections for the next 12
months indicate 216,000 youth
will develop signs of depression;
128,000 youth will seriously con-
sider suicide; more than 120,000
youth will make a suicide plan; and
72,000 youth will make a suicide
attempt.
If you have questions or know of
someone who needs help, contact
Kadima at (248) 559-8235.

Tequila and Talmud

ow do men balance the bless-
ings — and demands — of
work, family and personal
time? This was the conversation at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek's inaugural
gathering of "Tequila and Talmud: A
Dad's Night Out" led by Rabbis Joseph
Krakoff and Aaron Starr on April 28.
Whether over a glass of beer, scotch

Foundation; and

Shaarey Zedek's event offered fun, friendship and learning.

or tequila, dads from throughout Metro
Detroit gathered for fun, friendship and a
little learning.
"In some ways, the struggle to find this
balance is as old as the Talmud itself'
Starr said, "and in some ways, it is totally
new. As 21st-century Jews, we have the
opportunity to learn the wisdom of our
sages along with garnering advice from

other dads walking the same path today"
The event was underwritten by Dr.
Mark and Halley Uzansky of Bloomfield
Hills.
Shaarey Zedek will offer a parallel
conversation for women, "Martinis and
Mishna: A Mom's Night Out:' at 7 p.m.
Thursday, May 26, at the 7 Restaurant
and Lounge, 6545 Orchard Lake Road,

Jeff Linden of Farmington Hills and

Rabbi Aaron Starr

West Bloomfield.
Local educator Rebecca Starr and
Megan Topper, Shaarey Zedek's assistant
director of youth and family education,
will lead the event designed for moth-
ers of children ages 7 and younger. The
conversation will be about "sanctifying
family time" The program is open to the
community. II

of West Bloomfield
