To Teach Beth Shalom Sisterhood honors two educators. T he Congregation Beth Shalom Sisterhood will celebrate educators at its annual Donor Dinner May 11 by honoring Alicia Nelson of Southfield and Mona Greenbaum of West Bloomfield. Both have had long careers as educators in the community. Their children will make the presentations. Nelson grew up in Chattanooga and met her husband, David, Beth Shalom's rabbi emeritus, while studying at New York University. With a master's degree in English education, Alica taught in New York public schools. The couple spent Alicia Nelson two years in Rio de Janiero, where son Harry was born; then three years in Baltimore, where daughters Debra and Reva were born. The Nelsons have six grandchildren. After moving Mona to Detroit in 1972, Greenbaum Nelson taught in Beth Shalom's reli- gious school. She started a Meals for New Moms program at Beth Shalom and organized Detroit's first women's seder and directed it for 10 years. She taught English for many years at Hillel Day School in Farmington Hills. Now she runs her Judaica arts and gifts store, Tradition! Tradition! Mona Greenbaum was born in Newark, N.J., and graduated from Kean College of New Jersey with a degree in elementary education. She taught for two years before moving to Portland, Ore., with her new hus- band, Beth Shalom's Cantor Samuel Greenbaum. She studied mathematics at Portland State University; then the family moved to Detroit in 1973. Mona taught math at Akiva Hebrew Day School. After earning an MBA at Wayne State Unversity, she taught elementary and high school math in Berkley for more than 12 years. She later taught for five years at Hillel Day School. She continues to tutor students in math in her home. The Greenbaums have three chil- dren, Alex, Shiri and Ilana, and seven grandchildren. To RSVP, contact Beth Shalom at (248) 547-7970.
