Arbeter Seder
Workmen's Circle celebrates justice
for workers, Jewish history, culture.
T
he Michigan Workmen's Circle/
Arbeter Ring is an organization
that has long been dedicated to
advocating for social justice and specifi-
cally workers' rights.
This fact is embedded in its name
— arbeter means worker in Yiddish.
The Jewish cultural organization held a
Passover seder April 10 at the Fiddler res-
taurant in West Bloomfield.
In addition to a delicious Passover-
themed menu with a distinctly European
ta'am (flavor), those gathered read from
a unique Haggadah that celebrates the
themes of justice for workers, the impor-
tance of remembering Jewish history
and heritage as well as connections to
the Jewish community. Also included
were several traditional Passover
songs in Yiddish, the language histori-
cally supported and perpetuated by the
Workmen's Circle.
This seder also included history, read-
ings and poetry to commemorate the
Triangle Shirtwaist Fire of March 25, 1911.
This year marked the 100th anniversary of
the tragedy, in which an entire sweatshop
full of mostly Jewish women and children
workers was annihilated by a fire, due in
large measure to the negligence of the
business owners.
This tragic fire helped shape laws pro-
tecting workers and laborers in the 1900s,
particularly with regard to safety codes
and child labor laws.
The Workmen's Circle seder also includ-
ed a seder plate with an orange and potato
peels.
The orange is incorporated as a more
symbol of embracing all who are mar-
ginalized. The potato peels symbolize
hunger and famine and remind us of
those who still suffer without enough
nourishment. I
