S

tephanie Crawford is headed
overseas once again to repre-
sent the United States in an
international sports competition for
Jewish athletes.
The University of Michigan senior
from Novi received a surprise invita-
tion this month from Maccabi USA to
join the U.S. women's soccer team that
will compete in the open division in
the 13th European Maccabi Games in
July in Vienna, Austria.
"I thought about the opportunity
over a weekend, and I finally said,
`Sure, why not?'" said Crawford.
Two years ago, in the summer of
2009, Crawford was a member of the
open division gold-medal winning
U.S. women's soccer team at the 18th
Maccabiah Games in Israel.
She scored the team's first goal of
the tournament in an 8-0 win over
Brazil, and four goals in a 12-0 victory
over Great Britain. The U.S. beat Israel
4-0 in the championship game.
The trips to Israel and now Austria
have kept Crawford in the soccer spot-
light even though the 5-foot-3 forward
is no longer a member of the U-M
women's team.
She played for the Wolverines as a
freshman after a stellar career at Novi
High School, but endured an injury-
plagued sophomore season and decid-
ed to become a full-time student.

Crawford, 22, said she hasn't regret-
ted the decision.
"Not at all. I'm OK with she said,
adding that she's enjoyed playing
intramural soccer with her friends.
She needs to take two more classes,
one each next fall and winter, to earn a
bachelor's degree in actuarial math.
Speaking of math, she's selling raffle
tickets provided by Maccabi USA
to pay the $5,000 cost of her trip to
Austria. She didn't pay a cent of the
$4,000 price tag for her trip to Israel,
thanks to raffle ticket sales.
Crawford said her new U.S. team
will have at least one practice on Long
Island in New York before heading to
the European Maccabi Games, sched-
uled for July 5-13.
The soccer venue in Vienna
has the tongue-twisting name of
Trainingsplatze Happelstadion.
Maccabi organizers say this will be
a special event because it's the first
time Jewish athletes from across the
world will gather for a competition on
territory formerly under the control of
Nazi Germany.
Crawford was a three-time state
champion and two-time member
of the Michigan High School Soccer
Coaches Association Dream Team
when she played at Novi.
She's the daughter of Novi residents
Jeff and Libby (Vander) Crawford. 17
