Hunger Seder
Community Relations Council uses
Passover to focus on food needs.
T
he Jewish Community Relations
Council's April 17 Hunger Seder,
held at Yad Ezra in Berkley, pro-
vided participants with information and
action suggestions on the important topic
of community hunger.
Nearly 40 people attended, including
U.S. Rep. Gary Peters, D-MI; State Rep.
Lisa Brown, D-West Bloomfield; about 20
teen volunteers working at Yad Ezra dur-
ing J-Serve, the national Jewish teen day of
service; Yad Ezra volunteers and staff; and
JCRC board members.
After completing the seder, all were asked
to commit volunteer hours and charitable
contributions to places like Yad Ezra in the
cause of ending hunger.
The foodless seder, with empty drink
cups as well, was held to raise awareness
of the millions of Americans, including
disproportionate numbers of children and
the elderly, who suffer from food insecu-
rity. In Michigan, nearly one in four state
residents rely on some form of nutrition
assistance.
The date chosen, just before Passover,
tied in with the seder call of "Let all who
are hungry, come and eat. Let all who are
in need, come and celebrate the Passover
feast."
The "Haggadah" used during the pro-
gram used terms such as "food oppres-
sion:' added hunger as the 11th plague
and spoke of the Four Sons as different
levels of involvement in solving a commu-
nity problem.
While participants were thankful that
Congress approved the Healthy, Hunger-
Free Kids' Act at the end of 2010, seder
leaders expressed concern about reported
plans for significant budget cuts to the
federal Emergency Food and Shelter Act.
JCRC Associate Sarah Crane, aided by a
group of volunteers, recruited the teen and
adult participants, planned the event and
coordinated the day's activities. I I
