Bringing Joy To Mothers

Daughter honors Mom by creating
JFS project to benefit women, kids.

E

lanah Hunger was in search of
the perfect Mother's Day gift
for her mother, Joy Nachman of
Bloomfield Hills.
Gift idea No. 1? Been there, done that.
Gift idea No. 2? Despite what the
manufacturer says, it's not funny or cute.
Actually, it's dumb.
Gift idea No. 3? This could work, pro-
viding I win the lottery.
"My mother has been a rock in my life:
strong, intelligent and beautiful:' says
Hunger of Sylvan Lake. "But like many
other mothers, she often wonders what
she could have done different, better.
"I wanted to do something to show her
that her children are caring and chari-
table individuals because of her. That her
children are creative, have dreams and
can pursue them because of her, and that
we are proud and grateful to have such a
mother (and, of course, this also pertains
to my father, but that's for another time)."

That's when Hunger created joy.
The Joy Project, founded by Elanah
Hunger, is a program of the Jewish
Family Service that helps women in
need.
For an $18 gift, the JFS sends a tribute
card to a mom, aunt, daughter or any
woman the donor wants to honor; deliv-
ers a Mother's Day gift to a woman in
need; and contributes funds for women
and children in crisis.
"This is a wonderful project:' says Amy
Haimann, JFS chief development officer.
"It shows how one caring community
member can impact so many."
The Joy Project began two years ago
when Hunger's aunt, Melissa Lax, put her
in touch with Haimann.
"It has been a chain of luck and won-
derful connections:' Hunger says. "The
first year, with only a few weeks until
Mother's Day, we were able to give lovely
baskets to JFS clients who could really
benefit from some joy in their lives.
"The second year, with a very gener-
ous donation from Suave, coordinated

Joy Nachman and h
daughterElanah Hung

by Laurel Orley, we were not only able to
provide 300 gifts to women in need, but
also raise more than $5,000 for women
and children's programming."
This year, Tapper's Diamonds and Fine
Jewelry has signed on as sponsor, and
Hunger is hoping to "turn that $5k into a
family of $5ks."
"In the spirit of this immense feeling
for my mom, I wanted to create some-
thing as immense for her:' Hunger says of
the Joy Project. "I wondered: What if we
brought a project right here to Michigan
that allowed us to appreciate our moth-
ers by bringing happiness to other less-
fortunate mothers?"
As Mother's Day approaches, she

encourages others to honor their moms,
too.
"We can bring joy to the lives of many
women who are alone on Mother's Day
or whose families do not have the means
to celebrate their mother as all mothers
should be celebrated:' she says.
"Each donation shows a woman in
your life how much she is loved, shows
a woman in crisis that she is loved, and
provides counseling, intervention and
other critical social services to families
in our community. How could anyone
pass up a three-for-one deal like that?"
