The Met: Live in HD
presents German com-
poser Richard Strauss'
Capriccio, a meditation
on art and life starring
Renee Fleming, in movie
theaters 1 p.m. Saturday, April 23, with
an encore 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May
11. Strauss and Clemens Krauss wrote
the libretto, but its genesis came from
Austrian novelist, journalist and biog-
rapher Stefan Zweig (1881 - 1942), who
was born into a wealthy Jewish family
"My mother and father were Jewish
only through accident of birth:' Zweig
once said in an interview, yet he did not
renounce his Jewish faith and wrote
repeatedly on Jewish themes. A lifelong
pacifist who advocated the unifica-
tion of Europe, Zweig fled Austria in
1934 following Hitler's rise to power in
Germany, and lived in England before
moving to the U.S. in 1940. In 1941 he
went to Brazil, where, despairing at the
future of Europe and its culture, he and
his wife committed suicide in 1942.

POP/ROCK/JAZZ
Just in time for Mother's Day (just over
two weeks away) comes a new CD per-
fect for moms and moms-to-be. Labor
of Love, to be released April 26, is a pop
album co-written and performed by
Scarlett Cherry (nee Caryn Elizabeth
Kaplan). Its 12 songs — including
"Anger "Sleep Until You Dream;' "Never
Knew Love;' "Fierce Mama" and "I Get It
Now" — speak to mothers, connecting
them to their children in an inspira-
tional, meaningful and unique fashion,
says Cherry
"Being a first-time mom, I wanted to
document the feelings and emotions we
experience during pregnancy — from
every rush of love and every little flutter
to the moment we realize that we con-
nect with our own mothers in a whole
new way',' says Cherry, whose husband,
Lee Cherry, a celebrity photographer
and co-founder of L.A.'s Zodiac Show,
co-produced, co-wrote and suggested
the concept album because "we'll never
be first-time parents again:'
The entire project was conceptualized
and recorded during Cherry's pregnan-
cy, wrapping up just before the birth of
Riff Maxwell Cherry on Jan. 29, 2011.
Riff just happens to share a birthday
with his godfather, American Idol final-

ist and Grammy nomi-
nee Adam Lambert.
In a sort of "bibli-
cal karma:' Scarlett
Cherry performed with
Lambert and Riff's god-
mother, Alisan Porter
(who co-wrote some
of the songs on Labor
of Love), in the musical stage version of
The Ten Commandments.
To pre-order a copy of Labor of Love,
go to laborofloveproject.com . Digital
downloads of the album are $10.99
and CDs are $12.99 (and will be auto-
graphed by both Scarlett and Lee Cherry
if ordered before April 24).
