FRANKLIN 1111.1U)
The 18-hole championship course at Franklin Hills made Golfweek's
2010 list of "Best Classic Golf Courses;" it has been on the list many
times. Established in 1927, the club was built on a horse farm and
the course was designed by Donald Ross, one of the most influential
golf course designers in history. Architect Albert Kahn designed the
English Tudor style clubhouse. According to a 2002 publication pro-
duced by the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan, "Both men incor-
porated the land's natural hilly terrain, large boulders and fieldstones
into their designs. The golf course has been hailed nationally as a true
gem." The club also has dining and banquet facilities. Club officials
declined to provide additional information.

KNOLLWOOD COUNTRY CLUB
Knollwood was built on the 160-acre Higby farm, purchased in 1924.
Charles N. Agree designed the Tudor clubhouse, which opened in 1928.
The club underwent a $10.8 million renovation in 1996. Knollwood
offers an 18-hole championship golf course, tennis, swimming, fit-
ness facilities, fine dining and a Grand Ballroom which accommodates
up to 500 guests. There are four other banquet rooms for smaller
events and an open outdoor terrace. According to the club's website,
Knollwood "is noted for its beautiful hills and valleys sculpted by a
vast variety of trees and natural ponds. The club has a rich history of
providing an excellent and prestigious private club experience for its
members and their guests."

Tam-O-Shanter sits on a 160-acre tract leased in 1925 by a group of
wealthy Detroit industrialists. The club's 18-hole championship golf
course was built that same year by renowned architect C.A. Allison.
According to the club's website, the course was "recently renovated to
improve drainage and replace an aging irrigation system. Four ponds
rerouted a number of fairways, creating more interesting and chal-
lenging holes." Tam has played host to numerous tournaments, includ-
ing U.S. Open qualifiers, a Michigan Open Championship and local PGA
and state events. The club was recently renovated. It also offers fine
and casual dining, an Olympic-size swimming pool and kiddie pool, clay
tennis courts, banquet facilities and a fitness center.
