Tapped As DNC Chair

WASHINGTON (JTA) — President Obama
has named U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman
Schultz as the Democratic Party's chief
fundraiser.
Wasserman Schultz
(D-Fla.) has been a
party star since she was
first elected in 2006. She
succeeds former Virginia
Gov. Tim Kaine, who is
running for his state's
U.S. Senate seat in 2012.
The top job at the
Wasserman
DNC generally requires
Schultz
proven fundraising
skills, which Wasserman
Schultz is said to have in abundance.
A cancer survivor with young children,
Wasserman Schultz, 44, has emerged over
the years as a key party spokeswoman on
women's, health and Jewish issues.
In her freshman term she authored the
legislation that established Jewish Heritage
Month.
It's not clear yet if Wasserman Schultz
will keep her seat. Some of her predeces-
sors have kept lawmaker roles while others
have devoted all their time to the DNC

Pig's Foot, Note
Mailed To Rep. King

WASHINGTON (JTA) — A bloody pig's
foot and an anti-Semitic note were sent
to U.S. Rep. Peter King, the chairman of
the House of Representatives' Homeland
Security Committee.
Capitol Hill police
have opened an investi-
gation into the package
to King (R-N.Y.), Politico
reported.
The package's contents
were discovered when it
was scanned for explo-
Peter King
sives and never made it
to King's office, accord-
ing to reports. A letter with the package
referred to a Homeland Security meeting
last month in which King voiced concern
about the "radicalization" of the American
Muslim community.
The letter, which reportedly was full
of anti-Semitic sentiment, also report-
edly referred to King as a Jew. King, who
has served in Congress since 1993, is not
Jewish.
