New Camp At JCC
For Special Needs
The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit will offer a new
summer day camp for children and
teens with special needs this summer.
The Special Needs Adventure
Program (SNAP), for boys and girls
entering grades 1-10, provides a staff
ratio of 3:1 (additional supervision is
available for children who require 1:1
care).
The goals of the program are to help
children increase their independence

and make new friends, build self-
confidence, discover hidden talents
and experience membership in a com-
munity. Participants must be develop-
mentally ready for both structured and
unstructured activities in the outdoor
camp setting; be capable of participat-
ing in all scheduled activities; and be
non-violent. Sessions are four weeks
long and will be held at the JCC in West
Bloomfield.
Campers entering grades 1-4 will
experience a traditional summer camp
including swimming, arts and crafts

and music, plus a weekly field trip to a
local water park.
Campers entering grades 5-10 will
go on daily field trips to community
destinations, including water parks,
museums, the Detroit Zoo, bowl-
ing, CJ Barrymore's and Joe Dumar's
Fieldhouse.
Free bus transportation will be avail-
able in conjunction with the JCC's tra-
ditional summer camp.

Reconstructionists Unite
Rabbis And Congregants
Delegates from the 105 congrega-
tions of the Jewish Reconstructionist
Federation (JRF) have voted
overwhelmingly to join with the
Reconstructionist Rabbinical College
(RRC) to create a new unified govern-
ing structure that will guide the move-
ment in the 21st century.
At a special meeting in Philadelphia
on April 10, lay representatives of the
movement passed a proposal to create
a single organization that will include

a united board made up of lay lead-
ers and rabbis, a united professional
staff and a single chief executive. The
plan previously had been approved
by the boards of both JRF and RRC,
Reconstructionist Judaism's only semi-
nary.
The new organization also will
include formal participation by rabbis
from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical
Association (RRA). The RRA will
remain an independent professional
association representing the 310 rabbis
in the movement.

"The Reconstructionist movement
always has recognized the necessity of
change," said Rabbi Dan Ehrenkrantz,
RRC president, who will assume pro-
fessional leadership of the new orga-
nization."By combining our unique
rabbinical and lay resources, we are
poised to fulfill our mission of enhanc-
ing Jewish leadership, learning and
living for a new generation of North
American Jews:'
