Longtime Volunteer M ARILYN WEISS, 81, of Bloomfield Hills, died April 14, 2011. She grew up in Monroe. She entered the University of Michigan at age 17. As a senior in 1951, she start- ed dating Al, a dental school student. They married two years later. She got involved with transcribing books into Braille for the blind and later was a vol- unteer with the Women's Guild of Sinai Hospital. She also served as a gal- lery aide at the Detroit institute of Arts and was awarded a pin after 25 years of service. While at the DIA, she served on the Dreamers and Schemers Committee, planning bus tours for interested Detroiters, showing plans, upcoming changes and new artists happenings in the city. As an active member of the National Council of Jewish Women, Marilyn also found time for canasta, bridge and maj. For many years, she volunteered for the Jewish Book Fair and chaired the Local Authors Committee. Her grandchildren played an important part in her life. She made scrapbooks of the special events and happenings in each child's life and presented the book as each gradu- ated from high school. She was a part of a wonderful cir- cle of friends, the Michigan Dinner Club, made up of dental school friends — six couples who gathered monthly for over 50 years. There Services were held at Sinai Mortuary in Phoenix with burial at Mt. Sinai Cemetery in Phoenix. She is survived by her grandchil- dren, Scott and Mary Greenblatt, Randy Greenblatt, Stacy and Sonny Watanabe; great-grandson, Justin Dobrusin; brother, William Geer of West Bloomfield; niece and was also a dinner club made up of high school friends, which lasted for many years. Marilyn and her husband loved cruising and enjoyed 48 such trips together. One highlight was on their 50th anniversary, when they took their children and grandchildren to Alaska. Mrs. Weiss is sur- vived by her husband of 59 1/2 years, Dr. Allen Weiss; daugh- ter, Cathy Sparling of Bloomfield Hills; sons and daughters- in-law, Steve Weiss and Karen Ring of West Bloomfield, Scott Weiss and Marci Bakst of Georgia; grandchil- dren, Ben and Adam Spading, Mitch, Brad, Danny and Eric Weiss, Alexandra, Monica and Jake Weiss; sister, Dee Schaeffer of New York; sister-in-law, Belle Weiss; nieces, nephews, grand- nieces and grandnephews and a wonderful circle of friends. Mrs. Weiss was the devoted daugh- ter of the late Henry and the late Helen Miller; the loving sister-in-law of the late Norman Schaeffer, the late Shirley and the late Joe Finkel, the late Seymour Weiss, the late Jack and the late Rose Weiss, the late Herbert Weiss; the dear daughter-in-law of the late Sam and the late Lilly Weiss.
