She'll Liebman Dorfman Contributing Writer I n the 1980s, while thousands of Ethiopian Jews trekked away from economic hardship, religious persecution and political unrest, Tesfaye Kebede's daughters were being born into American freedom. Kebede came to Michigan in 1971 and Briekty Araia emigrated from Ethiopia in 1975. They married in 1986 and raised their children in Bloomfield Hills. "I'm extremely fortunate to have been born free in America," said Ellene, 22, of Bloomfield Hills. She said her parents told her and her sister Sophia, 23, who lives in Detroit, "that many people tried to escape Ethiopia for their freedom of religion." "It's obvious many people struggled and lost their lives for us to have this opportunity, and I'm very grateful for their courage she said. As the family prepares to celebrate Passover — beginning this year at sundown Monday, April 18 — the holiday's commemoration of the exodus of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt brings over- whelming thoughts of Ethiopia to Kebede. But while this achievement makes Detroit the fifth largest Jewish federation campaign in the United States, and keeps it first in per-capita giving among the 18 North American feder- ations in the "large city" category, it continues a steady decline in dollars raised that has affected campaigns across the nation.
