B'nai B'rith Chief
Indicted On Tax Fraud
WASHINGTON (JTA) — Dennis Glick, who
abruptly resigned last week as president of
B'nai B'rith International, has been indicted
on federal charges of tax fraud.
Glick, a certified
public accountant who
held a variety of posi-
tions over the years at
B'nai B'rith, including
treasurer, was arraigned
March 31 and released
on $50,000 bail after
Dennis Glick
entering a plea of not
guilty. He was arrested
March 23 on charges of falsifying tax
returns for a client and lying about it to
investigators.
If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in
prison and a fine of $1.25 million.
Glick, of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., was
indicted by a Pennsylvania grand jury.
Cal Irvine Students
Met Hamas Leader
SAN FRANCISCO (JTA) — Students from
the University of California, Irvine met
with a llamas leader during a 2009 stu-
dent trip to Israel.
The Institute for Jewish and Community
Research said it learned recently that
the university's branch of the Olive Tree
Initiative, an Israeli-Palestinian peace
organization, arranged for a meeting
between the Irvine students and a Hamas
leader in the West Bank. The institute is
protesting the meeting.
Rumsfeld: No Clemency
For Jonathan Pollard
WASHINGTON (JTA) — Former U.S.
Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld said
Jonathan Pollard should not be granted
clemency.
Rumsfeld, who served
under Presidents Gerald
Ford and George W.
Bush, said during an
interview on Israel's
Channel 10 that grant-
ing Pollard early release
would send the wrong
Jonathan
message.
Pollard
Pollard, who has been
imprisoned since his
1985 arrest, was sentenced to life in 1987
after being convicted of spying on behalf
of Israel. He is said to be ill.
Carter Met Gross,
Pressed For Release
ATLANTA (JTA) — Former President
Jimmy Carter on his visit to Cuba met
with jailed American contractor Alan
Gross and said he believes Gross is "inno-
cent of any serious crime."
'
Carter said he would
discuss Gross' case with
Cuban officials, but said
that was not the reason
for his visit.
Gross, 61, was con-
victed and sentenced to
15 years in prison last
Jimmy Carter
month for crimes against
the state. Cuban authori-
ties detained Gross in late 2009 on his way
out of the country, saying he was a spy.
N.Y. Budget Includes
Tuition For Rabbinics
NEW YORK (JTA) — New York's state
budget includes tuition grants for college
students attending some private religious
institutions, including Orthodox rabbini-
cal schools.
The money is available as part of the
state's Tuition Assistance Program under
which any theological student who meets
certain criteria, including attending a
three-year program at a tax-exempt insti-
tution based in New York, can be eligible
for the grants.
Some 5,000 men who attend dozens of
Orthodox rabbinical schools in New York
stand to benefit, according to the New
York Times, but most rabbinic seminaries
accept only students who have completed
college.
Reform Opposes, OU Backs
Religious Schools Vouchers
WASHINGTON (JTA) — The Reform
movement was "alarmed" by the pas-
sage of a bill in the U.S. House of
Representatives reviving a program that
funds scholarships at religious schools.
The Orthodox Union supports the bill.
The Republican-majority House passed
the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program
last week by a vote of 225 to 195. The
$100 million program, ostensibly enabling
parents in Washington, D.C., to steer their
children to schools of choice, effectively
favors religious schools because its schol-
arships, typically around $12,000, are too
low for secular private schools.
Jewish Education Event
Is Overbooked In Europe
BERLIN (JTA) — Some 6,000 young
Jewish leaders and educators applied
for slightly more than 1,000 spots at a
European education and youth assembly
to be held in Paris.
Those who lost reserved spots at this
week's conference will be the first invited
to the next event of the European Council
of Jewish Communities.
The participants from across Europe
converged on Disneyland Paris April 3-4
for the ECJC's inaugural Jewish Education
and Youth General Assembly.
