Emigres Arrested
At Israeli Embassy
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Dozens
were injured and arrested at a
demonstration outside the Israeli
Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia,
last week.
Some 80 demonstrators claim-
ing Jewish heritage were arrested
and about the same number were
injured as they demanded the
right to immigrate to Israel.
Reuters reported that some 500
members of the Association of
Ethiopian Jews in Addis Ababa had
gathered at a nearby makeshift
synagogue to begin protesting
when they were raided by police.
The Associated Press said
2,000 members of the Beta Israel
Association had gathered near the
Israeli Embassy when they were
attacked by police.
More than 100,000 Ethiopian
Jews live in Israel, most brought in
the 1980s and 1990s.
Israel's Cabinet in November
2010 approved a plan to bring
about 8,000 more Ethiopians with
a Jewish background, known as
Falash Mura, to Israel over the
next four years.
They began arriving in February
and will continue at a rate of about
200 a month.

Despite Turmoil, Yemen's
Jews Choose To Remain
NEW YORK (JTA) — The 250 or
so Jews remaining in Yemen insist
on staying despite the upheaval
in their country, Jewish organiza-
tional officials say.
Long a target of campaigns by
Jewish organizational officials in
the United States and Israel to
get them to emigrate, the Jews
remaining in Yemen simply do
not want to leave, according to
a Jewish organizational official
involved in the effort.
In March, Yemen's President
Ali Abdullah Saleh blamed the
violence and unrest in his country
and around the Arab world on "an
operations room in Tel Aviv" that
is "run by the White House."
Despite his pronouncements,
Saleh has given protection and
support to the country's Jews at
a compound in the capital city of
Sanaa.
After recent unrest in Syria,
President Bashar Assad made sim-
ilar statements blaming Israel.
