and the resources and is credited with
saving thousands of children. Detroiter
Fred Butzel was among the many
wealthy American Jews who helped
ensure the safety of these children.
In Detroit, the Rosenberg family
became adoptive parents to Levi, his
brother Ernest and sister Ruth. In 1938,
Levi's parents and youngest sister,
Miriam, came to
Detroit.
In 1941, the
young boy

America to
escape Nazi
persecution was

U.S. Army. Like

immigrants,
Levi never hesitated about fighting for
the liberties and freedom of his new
home. He served with honor in the
Pacific, earning both a Silver Star and
Bronze Star. With painful detail, Levi
shares his emotional memories of war,
including the sadness of losing friends,
his own close calls and the patriotism
he felt fighting for his adopted country.
After the war, Levi married his sweet-
heart Ruth. The couple had six children.
Levi went on to serve as chief fiscal
officer for Sinai Hospital and later as
treasurer and senior vice president of
St. Joseph's Hospital in Mt. Clemens. His
range of community service is broad;
but for more than 25 years, he served
on the board and as treasurer of the
Jewish Historical Society of Michigan.
Tickets to the April 10 event are $5
for JHSM members and $8 for non-
members. For more information and
reservations, call (248) 432-5517 or

enno Levi of Oak Park will
share the story of his escape
from Germany at age 11 and
his time serving in the U.S. Army during
World War II, when he joins the Jewish
Historical Society of Michigan and the
authors of The Sweetness of Freedom:
Stories of Immigrants at a panel discus-
sion at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 10, at the
Oak Park Jewish Community Center.
Levi, who had the prescience to dili-
gently record his wartime memories, is
one of more than a dozen immigrants
who share emotional memories of
the journey that led them to America
and how they became true Americans
by adding to the fabric of our lives in
Michigan. Also included is the story
of Louis Padnos, who built one of the
leading scrap metal and recycling corn-
panies in western Michigan.
Most of the book comprises the
stories told by these Americans, with
Michigan authors Martha Aladjem
Bloomfield and Stephen Garr Ostrander
purposefully taking a back seat and
injecting only short introductions to
each vignette. The Sweetness of Freedom
recently received the 2011 Michigan
Notable Book Award.
Benno Levi came to America in
January 1935, as part of the famed
Kindertransport, the name adopted
for the efforts undertaken by the
German-Jewish Children's Aid Society,
established in 1934 to receive and place
Jewish refugee children from Nazi
Germany. A coalition including the
Baron de Hirsch Fund, B'nai B'rith, the
American Jewish Committee and the
Women's Committee of the American
Jewish Congress provided the funding
