FEATURING THE MICHIGAN OP:: THEATRE ORCHESTRA CONDUCTED BY STEPHEN LORD Flutist Eugenia Zukerman brings her "third act" to the Vivace Music Series. MICHIGAN David DiChiera, General Director Suzanne Chessler Special to the Jewish News E ugenia Zukerman, joined by pianist Milana Strezeva and soprano Svetlana Strezeva, will feature the music of French and Russian composers Saturday evening, April 9, at the Birmingham Temple in Farmington Hills. "I call this time of my life my third act as I take on new projects I feel will be creative and really meaningful," says Zukerman, in her 60s and planning to perform selec- tions by Francis Poulenc and Gabriel Faure. "I continue to tour and have been chosen the artistic director of a new, 10-day, international festival that the Dallas Symphony Orchestra is doing in 2014. I'm writing another novel and a lot of book reviews for the Washington Post. I recently married for the third time, and three is the charm." Zukerman, who has appeared around Michigan over the years while accepting international engagements, has worked in the state with her daughter, soprano Arianna Zukerman. Her other daughter, singer-songwriter Natalia Zukerman, has brought more con- temporary sounds to local stages. "What's fun about the program I'll be doing with Milana and Svetlana is presenting melodies on the flute and then in song:' she explains. "I think it's a nice way to have something that is varied but with an overall theme. "Because Svetlana and her mother are from Moldova, we want to include Russian music. Svetlana was a famous opera singer in Russia and was called the "Russian Nightingale" by the press there. "Milana, who appears as a soloist as well as with chamber musicians, does many recitals with me. I met her at a concert that I played, and we got to know each other before working together." Zukerman, who studied at Juilliard and has made some 20 record- ings, recently moved on from 13 years as artistic director of the Vail Valley Music Festival in Colorado. Describing herself as a cultural Jew, she has performed in Israel. A reminder of her bout with an autoimmune disease 15 years ago can be found in bookstores. Coping With Prednisone, which details her experiences with the difficult treat- ment she needed, is still available. "My life is fun," she says. "Making music is a great joy, and it's playful, especially when I'm working with other people. I even like practicing. "I call myself an antique Young Concert Artist because I was on the Young Concert Artist roster, and it's their 50th anniversary. I hosted an event for them. "I can't believe I'm not 18 because of the way I feel inside. I love my new life with my husband, Richard Novik, senior vice president of New York State Broadcasters Association. He has a farm two hours north of New York City, where we hike, feed the horses and enjoy the dogs."
