Proceeds from the event will benefit Kadima's hild and Adolescent Program and its Miya Jo Must Home. The keynote speaker will be Clark Flatt, president and founder of the Jason Foundation. Flatt's son Jason, an active, average 16-year-old, took his own life in 1997. Flatt has dedicated the Jason Foundation to providing education and awareness programs to equip young people, educators and parents with resources to help identify and assist at-risk youth. There are critical and unmet needs for children with serious emotional and behavioral disorders, and their family members to receive out-patient mental health services. New statistics on increases in seri- ous bullying and adolescent young adult suicide reinforce the services provided in Kadima's Child and Adolescent Program. Suicide is the third leading cause of death of youth aged 15-24 years and the sixth lead- ing cause of death for 5-14-year- olds. In Michigan, children receive 3 percent of mental health funding, making long-term intensive treatment non-existent and creating solutions that do not meet the long-term needs of children and adolescents diagnosed with serious emotional and behavioral disorders. Kadima offers wrap-around servic- es that include parent support groups, children's treatment groups, respite and home-visit services, individual and family counseling, social and rec- reational activities, crisis intervention and education to the community. Tickets for the April 28 Healthy Body, healthy mind event are $50. For more information, contact www. kadimacenter.org or Paula Schonberg, (248) 559-8235, ext. 118. BirminghamFarmersMaiketorg harris marketing croup 46 March .'11 2011 eaumont Hospital, Royal Oak is the third hospital in the world to use a new microwave ablation system to treat cancer. Michael Savin, M.D., interventional radiologist, performed Beaumont's first two minimally invasive pro- cedures using the MicroThermX Microwave Ablation System. "This is a promis- ing, new technology to treat liver cancer," said Dr. Savin. "It's good to have one more tool in our treatment toolbox. MicroThermX has many advantages — Dr. Michael quick set up, ease of Sevin use and possibly less side effects. It may prove to be the best option for treating large, inoperable liver and lung tumors more predict- ably." The new system kills cancer cells with microwaves. Other ablation treatments use lasers, radiofrequency energy, freezing gas or electricity to burn, freeze or otherwise kill the can- cer tissue. These image-guided therapies usu- ally require little time in the hospital. According to Dr. Savin, patients under- going microwave ablation can usually go home the following day and, in some cases, the same day. The procedure is done under gen- eral anesthesia or sedation. Guided by ultrasound or CT images, the physi- cian places a needle applicator into the tumor. Depending on the size of the tumor, the microwave energy usually destroys the cancer in 10 to 15 min- utes. Patients may experience less pain afterwards. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared the MicroTherm X, made by BSD Medical Corporation, for ablation of soft tissue.
