China-Ryder Fix? Oh, Hell Yeah!

udes, this is an important month for music fans. Not only are the Pixies — one of alter-
native rock's most seminal bands — coming to town, but the most important film ever
made, The Grateful Dead Movie, is screening for one night only (on 4/20, of course).
And, lest need munchies for one of the many awesome shows featured, there's a gourmet

MISS THAT LONG STRANGE TRIP?

While it's too bad the music had to stop, at least in the classic sense, the memories (and
several musician-swapping machinations) continue to play on — nearly 16 years after the
death of Grateful Dead icon Jerry Garcia.
And, for the legions of fans spanning the globe known affectionately as Deadheads, the
next miracle ticket will be for a one-night screening of The Grateful Dead Movie at 7:30
p.m. Wednesday, April 20.
Not since its initial release in 1977 has this legendary tome been in wide release. Warn-
ing: Tickets went on sale last month so you may have to walk in the parking lot asking,
"Who has my miracle?"
Participating Detroit-area theaters include the AMC Forum 30, Sterling Heights; AMC
Livonia 20, Livonia; Regal Commerce 14, Commerce Twp.; and the Ann Arbor 20 IMAX,
Ann Arbor. For a complete list of theaters around the region, go to dead.net .

TRUNK SHOW APRIL

PURPLE REIGN

After eight years of red tape, the musical The Color Purple finally opened on Broadway
in December 2005. Now, for three performances only, the fantastically glorious show
comes to Detroit's Fox Theatre.
With Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones among the co-producers, the inspiring story is
set to a Grammy-nominated score featuring gospel, jazz, pop and blues. (Two of the three
composer/lyricists — Allie Willis, a Jewish Mumford High School grad, and Stephen Bray
— grew up in Detroit; Bray worked with Madonna early in her career.)
8 p.m. Friday-Saturday, April 8-9; 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10. Tickets start at $30. Fox
Theatre, Detroit. (800) 745-3000; olympiaentertainment.com ; ticketmaster.com .

FASH1ONISTA FOR A DAY

Get your Project Runway fix during the off-season with Season 2 designer Nick Verreos.
The former contestant, who has dressed Heidi Klum, Eva Longoria and more, hosts Put-
ting It All Together at Macy's Twelve Oaks.
The designer will choose two contestants from the audience to style models for two
different scenarios: an interview for your dream job and a night out with the girls. The
winning stylist will receive a $100 Macy's gift card — and the admiration of all her friends.
Verreos also will share his fashion dos and don'ts, plus hot tips for spring. 2 p.m. Satur-
day, April 9. Macy's Twelve Oaks, Novi. (248) 344-6800; macys.com .

HERE COMES YOUR MAN!

Pixies fans, rejoice! Black Francis, along with bandmates Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and
David Lovering, will perform each and every song off their classic 1989 album, Doolittle,
including "Debaser,""Hey" and, of course, "Here Comes Your Man," along with related B-
sides, at a one-night visit to the Fox Theatre.
The band, which Kurt Cobain cited as being Nirvana's single biggest influence, will
open its concert with a showing of the 1929 Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali surrealist short
film, Un Chien Andalou, which inspired Black Francis to write the song "Debaser." 7:30 p.m.
Friday, April 22. Tickets start at $35. Fox Theatre, Detroit. (800) 745-3000;
olympiaentertainment.com ; ticketmaster.com .

NOT A DOILY IN SIGHT

Celebrate the end of brutal winter with the freshest goods from Detroit's growing craft-
scene subculture. A new generation of do-it-yourselfers is bringing a quirky-cool vibe to
crafting, and Handmade Detroit, a loose collective of "people who like to make stuff"is
the glue bringing it all together. (Oh, those pesky puns.)
The baby of Carey Gustafson, Stephanie Tardy and Lish Dorset, Handmade Detroit is
making crafting cool by showcasing the wares of talented fellow crafters at events like the
third annual Craft Revival, held at the Loving Touch pool hall/bar in Ferndale.
Kick off the event (along with Ferndale's Green Week) with a band showcase and pre-
view party 9 p.m.-2 a.m. Friday, April 15, then stop and shop local artisans and partici-
pate in hands-on crafting 12-6 p.m. Saturday, April 16. Admission is free.
