Can Illness Be
A Punishment?
Parshat Tazria: Leviticus 12:1-13:59;
Ezekiel 45:16-46:18.
ur Torah portion this week
deals almost exclusively
with skin diseases, not the
most inspiring of subjects.
The Torah goes into great detail
how to recognize them — details
I will not share. It seems at first to
offer a difficult and painful idea.
God gives certain diseases
to people as pun-
ishment for sin.

I do not think,
though, that this
is the Torah's ulti-
mate purpose here.
The Torah describes
diseases that are also found on
fabrics and walls. Our commen-
tators observe that this must have
been a supernat-
ural occurrence,
something they
had never seen in
their own days.
I think the
Torah is telling
us not to be judg-
mental of people
with disease
unless we can
verify it was from
God. Our sages
tell us this is no
longer possible.
Therefore, judg-
ing others for
their afflictions
becomes a sin, too.
We live in a time of a great num-
ber of new and scary illnesses. We
occasionally try to console ourselves
by judging others. We say people
develop certain diseases, especially
HIV/AIDS and other STDs, because
of their behavior, and that it is God's
will that it should happen.
It is hard for me to believe that

Our sacred task
is not to judge
but to comfort
and heal.
God would send illness as a punish-
ment for sin, even for behaviors of
which we do not approve. If that were
the case, why is there not an illness
for wife beaters or child abusers?
Our job is not to judge those who
are ill. Our job, our sacred task, is to
comfort and heal them.
