Why Buy New?
"RE-DO"
Friends, Friends, Friends
To those who say, "None of my friends
live here anymore," Victor tells them,
"Get involved and make some new
friends. Meet people at work or social
events or synagogue or by joining
groups or through your children.
"There are a lot of young people
here; they just don't all know each
other. Sandra's boyfriend Adam is
involved in every kind of sport in
town with other young adults. The
more the two of them do, the more
people they meet."
A myriad of programs and activi-
ties for young Jewish adults are cre-
ated and sponsored by local agen-
cies and groups, including Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's
Young Adult Division (YAD) and
CommunityNEXT, which was created
to help connect the young Jewish
community with areas of involvement
geared toward them.
Available for joining are book clubs,
weekly card games, outdoor activi-
ties like hiking and rock climbing,
Israel travel and classes focused on
everything from Torah, Jewish texts,
yoga and food to programs for young
adults looking to learn more about
the Metro Detroit Jewish community.
Jewish Vocational Service and
CommunityNEXT each sponsor
job-seeking and interview skills pro-
grams. CommunityNEXT, along with
Hebrew Free Loan, offer funds for
Jewish business owners.
An Orthodox young adult group in
the Young Israel of Southfield area has
welcomed 22 new families to their
neighborhood after showcasing the
community and offering information
on schools and homes, employment
assistance, networking and interest
free loans for up to $7,200 for hous-
ing.
Young adults involved in the Isaac
Agree Downtown Synagogue in
Detroit have played an active role in
the revitalization of the Conservative
institution, working toward creating
a hub of Jewish life in the Detroit
neighborhoods where many of them
live. And, on May I, Moishe House
will open in Detroit, providing a home
setting where young Jewish adults can
come for Jewish programming and
social activities.
"We need to let parents know that
these things are here for our kids,"
Victor said. "There's so much more
to do in our town than most of them
realize. This is a great place for them
to live.
"When they leave it not only
impacts contact between parents and
their children, but also the growth
within our Jewish community. We
need to continue to provide positive
images of our community, especially
for Jewish families who maintain the
traditions that many of the adults
of our generation have instilled and
passed on to their children.
"Michigan and our Metro Detroit
Jewish community are on the road
back," he said. "The more people who
hear about what we have to offer, the
more of a snowball effect will occur
with our young, future Jewish com-
munity; young leaders coming back
to their roots, to their families and
to their homes."
