medical attention.
She recounted how they crossed
the border into Austria in 1979, and
then went through Italy. She told of
how someone was waiting for them
at the airport when they landed, and
how money was raised to fly in a doc-
tor to perform surgery on her father
that likely saved his life.
"Everything I have in my life and
everything I will ever accomplish
is because of you and people like
you making at difference for me at a
critical moment in time she told the
audibly sniffling audience.
She urged participants to recognize
that "the critical moment is now and
the person to make a difference is
you."
Rachel Wright of Birmingham pre-
sented at the Birthright Israel Alumni
& Young Leaders Happy Hour, talking
with the audience gathered over deli
and salads about how important the
Birthright trip was in her life and
how much she knows it means to
others.
The event was about having fun
and also reminding people that they
have a responsibility to help ensure
the experience continues.
"I was thrilled to see so many past
Detroit participants and just people
who support the program in general,"
she said.
Taking It Home
Afterward, Detroiters and a smatter-
ing of Detroit fans met in Kaufman's
Mandalay Bay suite. Among them was
Lippitt.
"I think Detroit has done an amaz-
ing job of showing up here, whether
it's the shirts or the spirit that Detroit
brought or the involvement in a
number of the different sessions:' he
said. "I've had so many people that
live elsewhere come up to me and say,
I'm so excited to see Detroit here so
strong."
As for a long-term takeaway, he
urged Detroiters to follow their inter-
ests and get involved in whatever
aspect of the community excites
them most.
"However they can add the idea of
giving back to the community into
their life he said, is positive.
He noted that this generation of
Jews comes from a different place
than the generations before them.
