F

ew people would think natural
stone can provide warmth to a
home, but when Geoffrey and
Benora Gladstone began building their
contemporary home in West Bloomfield
that's precisely the material they sought
for their fireplace in their otherwise
contemporary-styled home.
"My wife and I feel that a house com-
pletely and totally contemporary tends
to be fairly cold': Gladstone said. "We
wanted a pretty, rustic look, like it was
unfinished. We were trying to stay away
from polished marble and granite."
For the Gladstones, there's nothing
like the real thing when it comes to
stone. But in recent years manufac-
tured or man-made stone that includes
veneer, stacked stone, cast stone or cul-
tured stone have become popular.
Manufactured stone is a decorative
building material manufactured to
replicate the look of natural stone. It is
fabricated by pouring a lightweight con-
crete mix into rubber forms of different

process that makes it resemble real
stone. The resulting product is attached
to walls with special mortars.
The advantages of the various manu-
factured stones over real stone are:
• Cost
•Weight
•Variety of designs and colors, and
• Easier installation.
Manufactured stone is approximately
one-third to one-half the cost of natural
stone and also has a significantly small-
er waste factor. It is simple to install and
can be done over a weekend and works
well with glass, metal and ceramic.
Compared to natural stone, manufac-
tured stone is not as strong. If a piece
breaks or is removed from the wall,
unless it is replaced the crack is signifi-
cant. Manufactured stone also is not as
reusable as natural stone.
One offshoot of manufactured stone
— cultured stone — dates to 1962
when brothers Garrett and Floyd Brown
of Vallejo, Calif., saw the need for a new
kind of building material, according to
manufacturer Owens Corning.
