Israel Maccabi Thirty local teens to compete. Steve Stein Special to the Jewish News T hirty teens ages 14-17 will represent Detroit this summer in the first JCC Maccabi Games and ArtsFest ever held in Israel. Twenty-eight of the 30 are athletes. There are 11 girls soccer players on an age 17-and-under team, nine tennis players, five boys soccer players, and three swimmers. The two ArtsFest par- ticipants will compete in digital photog- raphy and vocal music. The girls soccer team, coached by Franci Silver and her husband Larry Silver, has already scored a goal. It hosted a fundraiser last week at Olga's Kitchen in West Bloomfield. The restau- rant donated 15 percent of each guest check to the team. "It was the girls' idea to hold the fundraiser and they did all the work',' Franci Silver said. "They spent a lot of time putting together the advertising. They did a great job." This is the third year together for most of the girls on the team. They competed in the JCC Maccabi Games in San Francisco, Calif., and Richmond, Va., the past two summers and, while they didn't win a medal, they had a great time. "Maccabi has become an important part of their lives:' Franci Silver said. "They've made friends and learned a lot. They're very excited about going to Israel. Our own kids aren't on the team, but these girls are like our children. We're honored to go to Israel with them as their coaches." It'll be the first trip to Israel for the coaches, who live in West Bloomfield. Franci Silver, 48, is a lawyer. Larry Silver, 49, is an insurance agent. They have two daughters, Erica, 20, and Marti, 17. The girls on the team range in age from 14 to 17 and all are in high school. They're from Bloomfield Hills, Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield. A couple were recruited by the coaches to fill open spots. Only 11 players were needed because Maccabi soccer is 7 on 7, different from the normal 11 vs. 11 game. Israel Detroit delegation head Stuart Bass said the cost per athlete is $3,600 for the July 24 through Aug. 5 experi- ence. The fee includes roundtrip airfare, meals, lodging and organized tours Larry and Franci Silver in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and the Negev. Competitions will be held at several venues. Because Detroit is sending 30 teens, costs will be waived for the delegation head and three coaches. Besides Franci Silver, the other designated Detroit coaches are Jodi Wolfe - Neirynck (ten- nis) and David Schwartz (boys soccer). Maccabi World Union, host of the Maccabiah Games held every four years in Israel, is hosting the Maccabi Games and ArtsFest in Israel and subsidizing expenses. Detroit Maccabi delegation head Karen Gordon said a raffle will be held to help pay expenses for participants going to Israel, or to the JCC Maccabi Games in Philadelphia, Pa., and Springfield, Mass., Aug. 14-19. All three venues are part of what's being called nationally the 2011 JCC Maccabi Experience.
