If running and hiking are more your
style, Israel maintains dozens of nation-
al parks with hiking trails for all ability
levels. Long-distance hikers can tackle
the Israel National Trail, which runs 580
miles and traverses the entire length of
the country. For competitive runners,
there are a number of marathons to
choose from — including Tel Aviv's TLV
RUN TLV; Ein Gedi's half-marathon,
which includes a run up Masada's Snake
Path; and Jerusalem's first-ever full
marathon, taking place this month.
Israel's warm climate and shores on
four seas add up to a plethora of water
sport options.
The Red Sea's coral reef, off the shore
of Eilat, is nearly 3,900 feet long and
is home to one of the world's richest
concentrations of tropical fish. The reef
starts just a few yards from the shore
and can be enjoyed by everyone from
the experienced scuba diver to the
beginner snorkler.
Over on Israel's eastern border,
whitewater rafters can enjoy the class
three and four rapids and challenging
narrow passages of the Jordan River.
And of course, there is always time
for some old-fashioned swimming in
the temperate waters of the Red and
Mediterranean seas.
