T
he word "vacation" often con-
jures up images of relaxing on
the beach in a warm weather
location, maybe with an outing to some
site or museum. But there are many
people who look for a little more action
in their time off.
For those adventure-minded souls,
Israel offers every type of physical
activity that one can imagine — from
hiking to biking, from parasailing to
cliff diving, from rappelling to rafting.
From the snow-covered slopes of Mount
Hermon to the coral reef in Eilat, Israel
is an adventurer's paradise from top to
bottom.
Israel is home to many unique natural
formations, which offer a playground for
some interesting activities. The Negev
desert's makhteshim — craters formed
by erosion rather than by an impact or
eruption — are found only in Israel. At
Makhtesh Ramon, visitors can rappel
down the crater's face — more than 500
meters deep — and enjoy a stunning
view of rock formations that are millions
of years old.
For the more adventurous, the lime-
stone cliffs at Rosh HaNikra — on the
Israel-Lebanon border — provide a jump-
ing-off point for free diving into the north-
ern Mediterranean (you can also take a
cable car down the side of the cliffs).
If the wide-open expanse of the cliffs
is a bit overwhelming, then an under-
ground visit to ancient cave networks
might be more up your alley. Visitors
literally crawl through history as they
explore the Hazan Caves and the Madras
Ruins — vast networks of tunnels and
rooms that served as hiding places for
Jewish rebels during the Bar-Kochba
Revolt against the Romans in the first-
century C.E.
Over just the past few years, Israel has
become a bicycle-loving country. The
Israel Ministry of Tourism is currently
implementing a five-year plan to build
more than 3,000 miles of bike trails
throughout the country. One major proj-
ect already under way is a trail circling
the Sea of Galilee. When completed, the
trail will run 80 miles and will pass by
many sites of interest in the area, such
as the Mount of Beatitudes, the Ein Gev
nature reserve and Mount Arbel.
Israel also hosts two annual bike races
— the Veolia Desert Challenge (www.
desertchallenge.co .i1), held in December
near Mount Sedom in the Judean desert,
and Tour d'Israel (www.tourtheisrael.
corn), taking place in March.
