for a tallit, to a chuppah. She also creates her own handmade tallitot that are sold at
Rachel's.
"I'm best at creating something without rules or a pattern," she said. "And I love mak-
ing family heirlooms."
"I didn't see the chuppah until the day of our wedding," said Samantha, who grew up
in Farmington Hills and met Jeremy, of Indianapolis, on JDate. The couple live in Chicago.
"My mom didn't want me to see it until it was finished. I knew I wanted flowers and
branches, so I designed the floral section with Bruce [Bolton] from Breath of Spring [in
Bloomfield Township], and he put all the pieces together.
"The day of the wedding, when I saw the chuppah for the first time and I looked up at
the gown, I just thought about all the history that was in it."
Klein remembers her mother describing her gown. "She said it was made of slipper
satin and had a huge train. She said when she got married on Feb. 2, 1941, it was a very
expensive dress. It cost $100." It cost Klein and husband Al $800 to turn it into a chup-
pah, which is being stored in an heirloom box with acid-free tissue in the Landes' home.
But it will soon be unwrapped and used again by Samantha's cousin, Jordan Helfman.
A rabbinical student at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati,
Helfman recited the seven wedding blessings during the Landes' wedding ceremony,
which was officiated by Rabbi Michael Moskowitz of Temple Shir Shalom in West
Bloomfield.
Samantha and Jeremy will be present in May when Helfman marries Jemma Rosen-
Webb in Cincinnati, under the family chuppah.
"I think tradition is so important in families," Samantha said. "It's nice to know we
have started a tradition that incorporates many generations of our family."
