here will be hundreds of win-
ners in this Sunday's Super
Raffle, no single one of whom
purchased a ticket.
All proceeds from the raffle will be
used to fund programs for children
and adults with developmental dis-
abilities at the Jewish Community
Center of Metropolitan Detroit, JARC,
JVS and Friendship Circle.
The raffle offers great possibilities
for those who do buy a ticket. This
year's prizes include the Suite of Suites
(use of private suites at the University
of Michigan, the Palace of Auburn
Hills, Ford Field, Comerica Park and
the Joe Louis Arena); a one-week
vacation in a two-bedroom condo at
a Four Seasons Resort in La Costa,
Calif., including roundtrip airfare for
two; and a $500 shopping spree at
Great Lakes Crossing.
Last year marked the first time the
agencies worked together on the fund-
raising project.
"We were facing a downward spiral-
ing economy that all not-for-profits had
to reckon with, and we needed to think
creatively," said Rick Loewenstein, chief
executive officer of JARC.
"We sat at the table with the execs and
development staffs of the four agencies,
which share our passion for providing
services for people with developmental
disabilities. Everyone got along extreme-
ly well. And each agency netted more
than $6,000 in raffle proceeds.
Beth Ahm Visiting Scholar
Focuses On Role Of Women
Dr. Rebecca Schorsch, chair of the
Bible Department at the Chicagoland
Jewish High School in Deerfield, Ill.,
will be teaching at Congregation
Beth Ahm as Scholar in Residence
over Shabbat
March 11-12. Her
subject will be the
role of women and
gender in Jewish
life and imagina-
tion. All are wel-
come.
On Friday night,
Rebecca
following 6 p.m.

services and a
7 p.m. congregational dinner (see
cost and RSVP information below),
"It was a no-brainer to go for Super
Raffle IL"
"The raffle is a fun way for people
to help raise critical funds to support
services for children and adults with
developmental disabilities," added JVS
CEO Barbara Nurenberg. "Our com-
mon goal is enhancing their quality
of life and their community inclusion.
We all focus on different aspects, but
whether it is camping, employment,
housing, social activities or support
services, we share this common pas-
sion and goal:'
Each ticket-selling team includes
representatives of all four agencies. So
far, Team Budaj, headed by JVS board
member Jeff Budaj, is in the lead. "It
is nice to have competition among the
teams rather than among the agen-
cies," he said. "All of us are striving
together to make a difference in our
community."
Other team captains are Jason Ellis of
the JCC, Suzan Curhan of the Friendship
Circle and Lisa Pernick of JARC.
Tickets for the Super Raffle cost $50
each or three for $100. They may be
purchased at all of the participating
agencies or at www.SuperRaffle.org .
The drawing will be at 2:30 p.m.
Sunday, March 6, at the JCC in West
Bloomfield during the Kids All
Together (KAT) event, a day of family
fun to support children with special
needs. Tickets may be purchased until
the raffle. Li
Schorsch will analyze the familiar
text "Eishet Hayil" (Proverbs: 31)
in a talk titled "Who is the Woman
of Valor? A Study of a Friday Night
Tradition." There is no charge for the
after-dinner talk, where walk-ins are
welcome.
On Saturday afternoon following
9:30 a.m. services and a free congre-
gational lunch, Schorsch will speak
on "God as Midwife and Women as
Saviors: The Feminization of the
Exodus." There is no charge for the
Shabbat afternoon learning session,
and walk-ins are welcome.
To make reservations for the
Friday Shabbat dinner, call (248)
851-6880 by 4 p.m. March 9. The cost
is $20 for adults and $8 for children
6-12. Younger children are free.
