Judge Denies Chabad's
Claim To $18 Million Gift
SAN FRANCISCO (JTA) — A Los Angeles
judge has denied Chabad of California's
$18 million claim against a philanthro-
pist's estate.
Superior Court Judge Mary Ann
Murphy said she found insufficient evi-
dence that Roland Arnall promised the
money to Chabad before his March 2008
death, according to the Contra Costa

Times.
During the trial, Rabbi Boruch Shlomo
Cunin, head of Chabad of California, testi-
fied that Arnall made verbal promises to
him in 2004 and 2008 to donate at least
$18 million to Chabad for an educational
center. Cunin's lawyer said Chabad has
already spent $800,000 on the property,
based on that expectation.
Arnall's widow told the court she didn't
know anything about it. In her decision,
the judge found that Chabad did not prove
such pledges were ever made.

Pro-Israel Groups Protest
Upcoming Day Of Boycott
SAN FRANCISCO (JTA) — Pro-Israel
groups are urging supporters to buy Israeli
goods on March 30 to counter a global
anti-Israel boycott called for that day.
"We are telling people to go to their
local stores, request the exact Israeli prod-
ucts being targeted, and buy them out:'
said Roz Rothstein, co-founder and CEO of
StandWithUs, which is spearheading the
Buy Israel Goods project together with the
American-Israel Chamber of Commerce.
March 30 has been declared the fifth
annual Global Day of Action by the
Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS)
campaign, an international initiative that
seeks to undermine support for Israel
using these three methods. The move-
ment is asking supporters to protest
outside stores that sell Israeli products,
and speak out for academic and cultural
boycotts of Israeli individuals and institu-
tions.

release of her husband on humanitarian
grounds. Gross' daughter, 26, has breast
cancer, and his mother has lung cancer.

Rescued Chilean Miners
Enjoy Israeli 'Pilgrimage'
JERUSALEM (JTA) — A delegation of
25 Chilean miners who survived 68 days
trapped underground in a collapsed mine
recited a thanksgiving blessing with Israeli
President Shimon Peres.
"The whole world followed your rescue
with excitement and your unbelievable
display of solidarity and love;' Peres told
the miners. "It is a miracle from above that
you are here with us today"
A representative of the Chilean miners
said, "Today we all say thank you to the
people of Israel, and we are hopeful that
God will bless Chile and Israel. The con-
nection between our peoples will benefit
from God's blessing."
The miners and their spouses or
guests arrived in Israel on Feb. 23 for an
eight-day visit, billed as a "Pilgrimage of
Thanks," which is being underwritten by
Israel's Tourism Ministry.

Answering
Israel's Critics

The Charge
Palestinian sources criticized Israel's
demolition of cisterns and wells in the
Hebron area, claiming the actions will
limit needed water resources.

The Answer
In the semi-arid climate of the West
Bank, preserving and marshalling
water resources is critically important.
The destroyed wells and cisterns were
not approved, thus were not part of the
Israeli-administered, environmentally
sound water conservation plan.
