SKATE AND DESTROY

The glue that binds together an unlikely cadre of chicks with serious attitude — and
an affinity for cheesy, badass aliases like Ghetto Barbie, Bruisie Siouxxx and Peaches N.
CreamYa — is an unwavering oath of sportsmanship. (In "real life,"these "tough broads" are
doctors, waitresses, engineers, teachers, accountants, hairstylists, mothers and wives).
The Detroit Derby Girls, founded in 2005, have picked up on the campy fun of the '70s
and earned a cult following all their own, and for good reason: They put on a spectacular
sports show. The ladies play crowd-pleasing, funky, punk-y classics during intermission —
and they're all heart.
Made up of five home teams, including the D-Funk Allstars and the Detroit Pistoffs, the
DDG offers fans a taste of national competition as their travel team takes on the Windy City
Roller All-Stars on Saturday, March 5.
Then the home teams return to Cobo Arena on Saturday, March 19. With many of the
girls' own families in the audience, the Detroit Roller Derby is a family-friendly environment,

When you've grown up with Merchant of Vino as your family's business, you can't help
but know a little something about wine. So when brothers Matt and Marc Jonna opened
Plum Market in 2007, offering savvy shoppers choices of organic, specialty and local prod-
ucts, it was only natural to have a wine bar, too.
Under the guidance of head sommelier (and Red Thread's buddy) Mick Deschamps, Plum
Market's CRU Winebar has become not only a showcase of highest-quality wine and beer
but also a source of education and information for guests.
CRU's weekly Thursday-night tastings and monthly exclusive events have become super-
chic social happenings where both beginners and connoisseurs can sample superb wines
and handcrafted artisan beers — while learning to talk the talk.
This month, to celebrate the NCAA College Basketball Tournament, the CRU will pit
grape-producing rivals against one another in their version of the"Big Dance," including:

America is right in our backyards. The 49th Ann Arbor Film Festival, held March 22-27
at the Michigan Theater, has showcased groundbreaking cinema from luminaries such as

In its sixth year, kosher food bank Yad Ezra has executed one
the area's most anticipated fundraising events: Ante Up for
Hunger, held this year on Saturday, March 5, from 8-11 p.m.,
raises much needed cash for the area's only kosher food pantry,
which helps more than 1,600 families each month.
In addition to the cards, there's white-knuckle bingo, a silent
auction, munchies and, of course, booze — can't have poker
without the hooch. $50 per person and a $50 buy-in to play
cards. The event is held each year in the food pantry's ware-
