researchers to plan projects and line up funding in advance so visiting Israelis can use Beaumont's advanced facilities to "potentially bring some- thing to fruition in the relatively short time they are here." The Memorandum of Understanding, signed by Folberg and Emek CEO Dr. Orna Blondheim spells out seven areas of mutual benefit: collaborative faculty research; sharing of scientific knowl- edge, leveraging clinical and surgical expertise through OUWB's affiliation with Beaumont hospitals and Emek's experience and best practices in treat- ing a diverse, multicultural popula- tion; a medical education exchange program for students; exploring joint fellowships and other higher learning opportunities; hosting and educat- ing administrators, faculty and other personnel; and discussion of mutually beneficial business or venture oppor- tunities presented by either party or by the Michigan Israel Business Bridge. The agreement was signed last year, but Folberg says he held off on a pub- lic announcement until Briscoe visited Detroit in mid-February and "until we actually had things in place. We wanted to be able to announce more than a piece of paper." So, in addition to Briscoe's visit, which included some teaching and making ophthalmology rounds at Beaumont's Royal Oak campus, the first Emek medical resident, a young Muslim woman, is scheduled to arrive here in May for a three-month stay. "She has been an outstanding resident," Briscoe said. "Very diligent, enthusiastic and motivated. She will be a very good ambassador for both Emek and Beaumont." Folberg, who interviewed her by Skype, agreed. Also this spring, Dr. Jeffrey Maisels, chairman of Beaumont's pediatrics department, who knows Israel well, will spend time at Emek teaching and exploring ways to implement the Memorandum. Folberg declined to discuss a bud- get, but said fundraising is underway. Of course, the relationship with Emek is just a small part of what the new Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine has ahead in the coming months. Classes begin Aug. 8 with 50 stu- dents selected from 2,200 applicants. The plan is to add an additional 25 students each of the next three years to reach 125. But it is also clear that the special opportunities the relationship with Emek provides fit seamlessly with what the school is aiming to achieve. "It's not us bringing something to Israel; this is bi-directional;' Folberg said, noting that the day before, Briscoe had introduced a technique to Beaumont doctors that they had not heard of, and they wanted to know more. "We have a lot to learn from Emek, including how to serve a multicultural population that is medically under- served. It is a good match for us:" 111 or .)
