DAVID S. ROSENBERG, D.O.

Is pleased to announce the relocation
of his medical practice to

"OK, Sweetie Pie, I'm sorry," Dr. Blum tells 8-month-old Autumn as he feels

for swollen glands.

Most of Blum's patients come in
with more routine illnesses, especially
since vaccines have eliminated so
many diseases that used to result in
hospitalization.
Still, "every week somebody ques-
tions me about the safety of vaccines:'
he says, with some dismay. "Most
people end up getting them anyway.
"I remember the excitement when the
polio vaccine was invented;' Blum says.
"It changed the lifestyle around here.
People don't even think about going to
swimming pools anymore,' once a site
where polio could be transmitted.

Then And Now
These days "we deal more with behav-
ior issues and school performance."
And no, he doesn't think Attention
Deficit Disorder (ADD) is over-diag-
nosed."I just had a mother in here yes-
terday who realized she had it',' he says.
"Children today,' he says, "don't get
enough exercise. Too many are over-
weight and eat the wrong foods. A lot

of mothers work and they're not able
to cook as nutritiously."
As for parents, Blum suggests: "Make
sure you eat dinner with your kids
every night and do some sport together.
"And try not to let them spend too
much time on social networks and
video games. Help them learn a new
word every day. Read."
As a clinical instructor at Wayne
State University Medical School in
Detroit, Blum has a raft of students
taking their pediatric training under
him. He sees some differences from
his own medical school experience.
"I think some of the students aren't
as interested in physical exams:' he
says. "They want to look up stuff in
computers and make a diagnosis.
They're also not as interested in art,
music and what's going on in the
world. I think they should pay more
attention to things like that.
"I played violin in the Southfield
Symphony for 20 years. You should
know more than one thing." fl
