OAK PAK HI 48117 ....I, S ✓ v" [NCYNIIvn THECOHHUNITY Congregations honor singer/composer Debbie Friedman. finger/song writer Debbie Friedman's death last month at age 59 ended a remarkable contribu- tion of music that crossed Jewish generations and religious branches. Several local synagogues have hosted programs honoring Friedman's memory and music, including Congregation Beth Shalom in Oak Park on Feb. 12 and Congregation Beth Ahm in West Bloomfield on Feb. 19. Some 80 people attended the Beth Shalom Havdalah service, led by Lisa Soble Siegmann and Shlomi Hamer, both playing guitar. Rabbi Robert Gamer and Cantor Sam Greenbaum both spoke of the legacy Friedman left throughout the Jewish world. Friedman performed at Beth Shalom in 2006 and elsewhere in the Detroit area, including at the Jewish Community Center. Singer Beth Greenapple and rabbinical student Aura Ahuvia led a healing service of prayers, songs and read- ings at Beth Ahm. One of Friedman's best-known songs, Mi Shebeirach — a prayer for healing — is sung every Shabbat morning at Beth Ahm. Greenapple is a former music teacher at Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit in Farmington Hills. Ahuvia serves as spiritual leader of the Ann Arbor Reconstructionist Havurah as she works toward rabbinic ordination. The two met at Hava Nashira, the Jewish Songleaders Workshop in Oconomowoc, Wis. Friedman helped start the program and inspired both women. fl Aura Ahuvia and Beth Greenapple lead the singing. Gathering for Havdalah at Beth Ahm 32 — Keri Guten Cohen and Alan Hitsky Emma Cherrin enjoys the songs at Beth Shalom. Andy Levin and Molly Levin, 5, of Bloomfield Township follow the Beth Ahm service. February 24 - 2011
