Scouts' Honor

Judaism and Scouting celebrated
in evening of friendship, reverence.

F

or the ninth year, Adat Shalom
Synagogue in Farmington Hills
welcomed Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts,
Venturers and Jewish War Veterans (JWV)
and their families to the annual community-
wide Scout Shabbat service.
On Friday, Feb. 18, Scouts from 15 packs
and troops joined together for an eve-
ning of reverence (the 12th Scout
Law) and camaraderie. The
service began with members
of the JWV (charter part-
ner of Venturing Crew 18)
leading the congregation
in the Pledge of Allegiance
followed by the singing of
"America the Beautiful:'
Numerous Scouts led por-
tions of the service joining with
Cantor Daniel Gross. Rabbi Aaron
Bergman discussed the common themes and
principles that exist between the Scout Law
and the Talmud, written by the rabbis 2,000

years ago.
And, in what is an annual ritual at the
service, each Scout was invited to share a per-
sonal Scouting accomplishment.
And what would a Scouting event
be without the requisite patch?
This year's Scout Shabbat patch,
given to all Scouts attending,
honors a founder of the Boy
Scouts of America, Mortimer
Schiff. Schiff, a member of
one of America's most active
and visible Jewish families, was
the first vice president of the Boy
Scouts in 1910 and became its presi-
dent in 1931.
After the event, Scouts and JWV fami-
lies enjoyed a pasta dinner hosted by Adat
Shalom's Youth & Education Department. II
