is hard to imagine U-M taking a
place in the pantheon of campuses
dedicated to academic achievement
and global understanding without
a learning connection with Israeli
universities....." rings true.
I would hope that our Jewish
community, which is the largest
benefactor, as a group, to U-M
would let U-M President Mary Sue
Coleman know how unacceptable
this is.
I have been to Israel many times
and have always felt very safe there.
As the Volunteers for Israel/Sar-El
regional director, I have had the
privilege of processing hundreds of
volunteers who have had absolutely
no security issues in Israel.

Our Downtown Synagogue
I remain grateful for your interest
in, and support of, the Isaac Agree
Downtown Synagogue. It is, there-
fore, with genuine gratitude that I
offer the collective thanks of our
entire congregation for the article
"Keeping Downtown Synagogue
Warm" (Jan. 20, page 26.)
Succinctly and accurately, Senior
Writer Shelli Liebman Dorfman
reported the situation in which
the synagogue currently finds
itself, vis-a-vis its extraordinarily
high utility costs, and described
the nature of the campaigns it
had mounted — to replace all
lighting fixtures and weatherize its
colorful interior window system —
in order to meet a challenge grant
awarded it by DTE Energy, the
objective of which was to become
more energy efficient and consid-
erably reduce its utility bills.
I am elated to report that the
goal set for matching funds has not
only been met, but also exceeded.
By means of a vigorous online
campaign as well as one more con-
ventionally conducted by mail, the
synagogue has raised more than
the amount needed to match the
challenge.
A heartfelt thanks to the officers,
board members and committed
congregants who worked tirelessly
to make the campaign a success.
And heartfelt gratitude to all who
responded so generously to their
efforts. We are most grateful.
