A funeral isn't an ordinary circumstance. That's why we have an extraordinary website. FRIEDEL DAVIS, 88, died Jan. 31, 2011, after a long and beau- tiful life. She was born in Dortmund, Germany, the elder daughter of David and Helen Davis Mertz and sister to Leo Mertz. Her fam- ily owned a bakery in Germany and as youngster she would deliver breads on her bicycle to the neighborhood for the Sabbath. When she was 16, in December of 1937, her family fled Nazi Germany immigrating to the U.S., where they set- tled in the Detroit area. Two years later, she married Irving B. Davis, who would remain her husband for 61 years. A "people person" with a strong sense of humor and a charming smile, she was a known figure managing the Mertz bakeries in Detroit and in Oak Park. Mrs. Davis also worked at the United Hebrew Schools and volunteered at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield and the West Bloomfield Public Library. Active in B'nai B'rith, she was the pres- ident of her chapter and voted Woman of the Year. In her last year, she moved to Agoura Hills, Calif., to be with her daughter and family; there she acquired many strong friendships. She leaves behind a beautiful and lasting legacy. They had three children: William (Zev) Seymour Davis, the late Mark Gregory Davis and Eileen Joy Davis. Mrs. Davis has six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
