Beth Ahm Healing Service
Honors Debbie Friedman
Singer Beth Greenapple and rabbinical
student Aura Ahuvia will lead a heal-
ing service of prayers, songs and read-
ings 7-8:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19,
at Congregation Beth Ahm in West
Bloomfield.
Beth
Aura Ahuvia
It will honor Debbie Friedman, the
Greenapple
composer of contemporary Jewish liturgy
who died last month at age 59. One of her best-known songs "Mi Shebeirach"
— a prayer for healing — is sung every Shabbat morning at Beth Ahm.
Greenapple is a former music teacher at Hillel Day School in Farmington
Hills. Ahuvia serves as spiritual leader of the Ann Arbor Reconstructionist
Havurah as she works toward rabbinic ordination.
The two met at Hava Nashira, the Jewish Songleaders Workshop in
Oconomowoc, Wisc. Friedman helped start the program and inspired both
women — who offer the healing service to remember Friedman and carrying
on her work.
Walk-ins are welcome but RSVPs are encouraged to Nancy Kaplan, (248)
737-1931 or nancyellen879@att.net .
Students Teach Others
Through 'Project Trust'
B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Region, through
a grant for its Enlighten America
Program, is cosponsoring Project
TRUST (Teaching, Reaching, Using
Students and Theater).
IlluminArt Productions of Michigan
produces Project TRUST, an Illusion
Theater of Minneapolis-developed
educational program. West Bloomfield
High students are touring, performing
educational, violence-prevention plays
in elementary, middle and high schools.
For example, the play What Goes
Around, for grades 6-12, addresses ste-
reotyping, sexual and racial harassment,
conflict resolution and respect.
Amid the proliferation of Internet
cyber bullying, the Academy of the
Americas in Detroit, a Detroit Public
Schools charter school, has requested a
Project TRUST performance. B'nai B'rith,
with funds from the Enlighten America
Program, will fully fund the Feb. 17
performance of What Goes Around for
sixth- through eighth-graders.
To schedule Project Trust, contact
Patty Ceresnie, (248) 661-1756, or
pjceresnie@comcast.net . Log on to

overview.

Thinking About God
"OMG! A Battle Between Faith and
Logic:' a Chabad program for Jewish
teens, is offered at the Beverly Prentis
Wagner Teen Center at the Jewish
Community Center in West Bloomfield.
Through OMG!, Jewish youth will
have the opportunity to examine long-
standing questions such as: Are science
and religion at odds with each other?
Does one have to believe in God to be
a good person? How can all religions
be right? Is religion the source of all
the suffering and wars in the world?
Should we believe just because our
parents and teachers tell us to?
The Shul in West Bloomfield and
Chabad of Novi sponsor the six-week
course beginning 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb.
20. To register, visit www.theshul.net or
contact Itty Shemtov, itty@theshutnet.
OMG! is produced by JLI Teens, part
of the Rohr Jewish Learning.
