years ago, and they continue to add
new adventures and new programs
every year.
This year's itinerary, for example,
includes a canoeing camp, a mountain
biking camp and Outdoor Adventure,
where children will create their own
shelter and study trees and animal
tracks. Another first: older campers
will have the chance to go whitewater
rafting as part of the Travel Camp.
Also new this year is theater
camp at the Berman Center for the
Performing Arts. The theater is more
than 15,000 square feet and features
400 seats, an extensive sound system
and a state-of-the-art computerized
lighting system. Music and theater
professor Debbie Tedrick, along with
professional actors and coaches, will
lead the camp, which will include
improv, games and auditions.
Center Day Camps includes free
door-to-door transportation from
most areas in Metro Detroit.
Programs also are available for chil-
dren with special needs, including the
new SNAP (Special Needs Adventure
Program). Created for boys and girls
entering grades 1-10, SNAP is for
children with developmental, physical,
neurological, learning and/or mental
impairments and will include all the
activities of regular camp, includ-
ing swimming, music and art, plus a
weekly field trip.

Double The Fun
Camps are a bit like chocolate bars.
Having one in your pocket is good —
but two is even better.
Last year, the JCC in Oak Park began
Camp Discovery, with its own deli-
cious collection of camps for children
ages 6-15.
This year, Camp Discovery will

begin an early childhood camp for
ages 2-5 and has expanded its offer-
ings to include Percussion Camp, Love
Our Earth-Green Camp for all the
little recyclers in your family, Animals
and Nature, Future Leaders, Hot-Shot
Movie Makers, Circus Camp and
Home Sweet Home.
The key to Camp Discovery is "flex-
ibility for parents and variety for kids,
with week-long camps from June 20
through Sept. 2," says Camp Discovery
Director Judy Front.
Last year, Front taught "Lizards,
Snakes and More," a week-long adven-
ture at Camp Discovery, and all her
campers went home with a fish and
many happy memories of holding and
caring for exotic pets — and having
an extraordinary amount of fun.
This year, "I'm very excited about
new our Love Our Earth-Green Camp:'
Front said. "My basement is filled with
containers that I've been recycling
over the past six months, and we'll use
all of these for art projects. The kids
also will create a community recycling
project and see it to fruition the last
week of camp."
Another first at Camp Discovery is
the program's affiliation with the for-
mer Camp Akiva.
The Akiva Hebrew Day School
summer day camp has now been
incorporated into Camp Discovery
and will provide rabbinic guidance
and parental support, thanks to Akiva
mom and JCC member Elana Lofman.
"I couldn't be more thrilled to be a
part of this partnership:' Lofman said.
"Two Jewish agencies coming together
to help each other succeed. What a
great lesson to teach our children of
how much we can accomplish when
we join forces."
