remaining for the Lakers tennis team. Some of those experiences include training at some of
the most well-regarded tennis facilities including Chris Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton,
Fla., and Nick Bollitieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Fla. He then tested his ability playing
in national International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournaments, where he ended up ranked 300
in the world for junior singles. In addition, he was ranked the No. 1 player in Israel from ages
14-16 and in the top three at age 18. He used his experience to become a tennis instructor him-
self at University of California, Los Angeles, where he still helps to develop younger players in
the summer.
His talent earned him a scholarship first at West Alabama University in Livingston in 2008-
2010, where he played in one of the top single's positions for two years, and now on Grand
Valley's team.
His ability as a player is important to the team, but his ability as a leader is especially
important to the young Grand Valley tennis team. In Israel, his training in Krav Maga (an
Israeli self-defense system) helped him become part of the Israeli Air Force. He brings the
same work ethic of a soldier to the tennis court, along with enthusiasm.
He can always be seen making an impact, even when he is not on the court.
"I will try to make our team stronger by helping them with my experience and help my
teammates in everything I can," Delgado-Rochas says. "My hope is to achieve our main
goals!"
John Black, head tennis coach, says, "Benny brings maturity to the team. He's a little older
and has served in the military and has leadership skills to go with that. He also brings another
perspective coming from another country and expands the horizons of others on the team.
He's a very strong tennis player and athletically will boost the team and make it better."
As his Jewish teammate, I am excited to have him join our team. It will definitely help
toughen our core and make our players all around him better. He is constantly improving our
team; providing helpful techniques and instituting an optimistic attitude.
The men's season is began this month and, with his help, our team may be able to get much
farther than last year. Our goals are set high to make Nationals and win our conference.
And along the way, Delgado is experiencing new things such as being surrounded by snow
for the first time.
Josh Kazdan of Southfield is a junior at Grand Valley State in Allendale.

of other excellent graduate and professional programs, you'll find that discovery begins at Wayne State.
