Shabads, Christian Dance ensembles and
Arabic elementary school drummers have
enchanted the attendees.
To Katz, the highlight of every World
Sabbath is inclusion of third- through
sixth-graders who decorate flags with
their ideas about World Peace. "These
flags are then sewn into Children of Peace
Quilts, which are proudly displayed at
World Sabbath services," she said.

She added, "The young participants
in the World Sabbath bring their friends
and family, and the event has grown
immensely, so big that the sanctuary at
Christ Church Cranbrook, where the first
10 World Sabbath Services were held, is no
longer large enough. The World Sabbath

Dems: Keep
Israel Aid
WASHINGTON—
Seven Democratic
senators, including
Derbbie Stabenow of
Michigan, called on
top Republicans on the
Sen. Stabenow
House Appropriations
and Budget Committees
to reject Sen. Rand Paul's call to eliminate
foreign aid to Israel.
In an interview with CNN, Paul, R-Ky.,
announced his support for slashing foreign
aid across the board, including a zeroing out
of aid to Israel.
In a letter to Rep. Hal Rogers, chairman
of the House Appropriations Committee,
and Rep. Paul Ryan, chairman of the House
Budget Committee, the Democratic sena-
tors criticized Paul's comments and sought
reassurance that aid to Israel would not be
threatened.
"These remarks are alarming and aim to
weaken the decades-long bipartisan consen-
sus on U.S. support for Israel': the senators
wrote.
"At a time when U.S. foreign aid is being
utilized to strengthen our partnerships
around the world, particularly in the Middle
East where our relationships are more
important than ever, we urge you to commit
to maintain full foreign aid funding to Israel':
the senators continued.

Stabenow said, "We cannot turn our backs
on our strongest ally in the Middle East. Our
own national security and stability in the
region is dependent on Israel's security, so
we cannot abandon them."
Other letter signers were: Bill Nelson,
D-Fla., Bob Menendez, D-NJ, Ben Cardin,
D-MD, Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, Robert
Casey, D-Pa., and Sheldon Whitehouse, D-RI.

Technion Battery Study
HAIFA (JTA) -- The Leona M. and Harry
B. Helmsley Charitable Trust has given the
Technion-Israel Institute of Technology a $5
million grant to further develop a light, long-
lasting and environmentally friendly battery
for energy storage.
The grant, which will be paid out over
three years, will be used to create The Leona
M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust
Energy Storage Complex, the Haifa-based
school's American fundraising arm. Its ulti-
mate goal is to help end the world's depen-
dence on fossil fuels.
Two U.S. patents are pending for the
Technion Si-air battery, a new type of silicon-
air battery that was developed by Technion
scientists. The Energy Storage Complex will
consist of three separate laboratories for
conducting battery research.
The Helmsley Charitable Trust, estab-
lished in 1999, has announced more than
$410 million in grants to charitable orga-
nizations.
