'Protest Not Islamist'
WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The Muslim
Brotherhood's English website rejected
claims that the Egyptian protests are
aimed at creating an Islamic state.
"The current uprising in Egypt is a
revolution of the Egyptian people and
is by no means linked to any Islamic
tendencies, despite allegations, nor can
it be described as Islamic:' said a state-
ment on Ikhwanweb, which calls itself
"The Muslim Brotherhood's Official
English website."
"The revolution is peaceful and calls
solely for reform and a democratic civil
state initiated by the youth through the
social networking service Facebook and
is far removed from any Islamist groups."
The statement also criticized
Ayatollah All Khamenei, the Iranian
supreme leader, for likening the protests
to Iran's Islamic Revolution in 1979.
In a separate statement, another
Muslim Brotherhood leader said last
week that a new government would end
Egypt's peace treaty with Israel.
Some Israeli and pro-Israel lead-
ers have expressed misgivings about
the Muslim Brotherhood's role in
the protests because of its rejec-
tion of Israel's right to exist and its
affiliation with Hamas. Other pro-Israel
voices have suggested that the Muslim
Brotherhood's influence is limited and
have welcomed the overall push for
democracy.

Natural Gas Explosion
JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Natural gas
supplies to Israel were cut off after an
explosion in an Egyptian gas line in the
Sinai Peninsula.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
told the Cabinet at its regular Sunday
meeting that Israel is prepared for "such
situations" and he didn't expect the
explosion from the previous day to cause
any disruption in power in the country.
The head of Egypt's natural gas com-
pany said the explosion was caused by
a gas leak; Egyptian state television said
it was sabotage. An Egyptian security
official said the blast was caused by an
explosive charge detonated inside the ter-
minal, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Gas supply also was cut off to Jordan,
according to reports.
It will take a week for the pipeline to
be repaired and for the flow of gas to be
restored to Israel, according to reports.
About half of Israel's electricity
comes from natural gas from both
Egyptian and Israeli sources. Egypt
began pumping gas to Israel in 2008 as
part of a 15-year contract. Prior to six
years ago, all of Israel's electricity was

generated by imported coal and oil,
according to the Jerusalem Post.
A large natural gas field discovered
underground off the coast of Israel late
last year would begin providing the
natural resource sometime in 2012,
according to reports.

Quartet Urges Peace Pact
JERUSALEM (JTA) -- The Middle East
Quartet urged Israel and the Palestinians
to come to an agreement by September,
citing Egyptian unrest as a factor.
The diplomatic Quartet — made up of
the United Nations, the European Union,
Russia and the United States — issued a
statement Feb. 5 following a meeting of
high-level representatives in Munich.
In its statement, the Quartet "empha-
sized the need for the parties and others
concerned to undertake urgently the
efforts to expedite Israeli-Palestinian and
comprehensive Arab-Israeli peace, which
is imperative to avoiding outcomes detri-
mental to the region."
The statement also said it "regrets"
Israel's decision not to renew its
10-month moratorium on building
in West Bank settlements. It also con-
demned rocket fire from Gaza on Israel
and "stressed the need for calm and
security for both peoples."
The Quartet in its statement com-
mended Palestinian Authority President
Mahmoud Abbas for his leadership and
for "continued Palestinian state-building
efforts," and also welcomed a package
of gestures announced the previous
day by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu and Quartet envoy Tony Blair
during a meeting in Jerusalem.
The confidence-building measures
include allowing new Arab housing
projects in eastern Jerusalem; the exten-
sion of a P.A. presence in the West Bank;
the building of Palestinian schools and
health clinics in the West Bank; the
granting of West Bank identity cards to
5,000 Gaza-registered residents of the
West Bank.
Also, the approval for construction in
Gaza including private homes, desalini-
zation plants and offshore work on the
`Gaza Marine' gas field, a P.A. gas field
adjacent to an Israeli one off the coast
of Gaza. The measures allow the neces-
sary construction material for the Gaza
building.
The Palestinian Authority rejected
the measures, with chief Palestinian
negotiator Saeb Erekat saying Feb. 5
that the offer "is just only tricks and
procrastination." Erekat said a cessation
of Israeli construction in the West Bank
and eastern Jerusalem is the only way
to build confidence and achieve peace.
