Service spreads a message of
harmony and hope.

he annual World Sabbath —
an interfaith service this year
held Jan. 30 at Temple Israel
in West Bloomfield — was started
by two Episcopalian priests, Rev. Rod
Reinhart and Rev. Ed Miillins of Christ
Church Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills.
Their motivation: concerns raised by
wars raging around the world in the
year 2000.
In 2004, when Reinhart moved to
Chicago, Gail Katz, a West Bloomfield
interfaith activist, took over as event
chair. Along with efforts of the World
Sabbath Committee, the event mes-
sage has spread throughout Metro
Detroit.

elementary and middle school teacher
and diversity club sponsor, the focus
was changed from clergy giving calls
to prayer for world peace to participa-
tion of our community's youth and
young adults.
World Sabbath is now the last
Sunday afternoon in January with a
Jewish young adult blowing the shofar,
a Muslim youth chanting the Muslim
Call to Prayer, followed by middle
school, high school and college youth
giving additional prayers for world
peace from many religions.
World Sabbath features musical
offerings that reflect the language,
