niversity of Pennsylvania
senior Andrew Samson was
one of 10 finalists for the
Fred Mitchell Award, presented annu-
ally to a collegiate placekicker who
excels on the football field and in the
community.
It's another
amazing achieve-
ment for a guy
who moonlighted
as a kicker for the
Bloomfield Hills
Andover High
School football
Andrew
team while focus-
Samson
ing on his No. 1
sport, soccer, and
became the top scorer in the 1,313-
game history of Penn football.
"It would have been great to win
the award, but it was a huge honor
to make the top 10. More than
600 kickers from FCS, Division II,
Division III and NAIA schools were
eligible:' Samson said.
A blue-ribbon selection commit-
tee that included several members
of the Pro Football and/or College
Football Hall of Fame chose Tom
Lynch from Saint Xavier University
of Chicago as the winner of the
award, named for an All-American
kicker at Wittenberg University and
longtime sports columnist for the
Chicago Tribune.
Samson, 22, has happily donated
his time to the Penn and Philadelphia
communities while playing foot-
ball and dealing with the rigorous
academic load of Penn's prestigious
Wharton School of business.
"I feel it's important to be a well-
rounded person, to get involved and
expand your network," he said.
That philosophy was in place long
before Samson arrived at Penn. The
West Bloomfield native was involved
in student government and the
National Honor Society at Andover,
and he competed in forensics in
addition to playing two sports.
One of his involvements at Penn
has been the football team's bone
marrow "Be the Match" program.

Football players walk through cam-
pus and ask students and staff to
join the national bone marrow reg-
istry by getting a cheek swab.
Samson has been a Wharton School
peer mentor and freshman move-in
volunteer and, when he was a fresh-
man, he helped organize a party at the
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for
teens with special healthcare needs
as part of a class project that required
students to work with a not-for-profit
organization.
He's also a member of the presti-
gous Friars Senior Honor Society.
A solid 3.3 grade point average
helped Samson land a job in mar-
keting and brand management with
Gatorade in Chicago.
He's also going to give profes-
sional football a try. The 6-foot-2,
195-pounder has hired an agent
and will participate in "pro days"
tryouts at several colleges in hopes
of signing with an National Football
League (NFL) team as a free agent.
"Very few kickers are drafted by
NFL teams:' Samson said. "I'm going
to give the NFL my best shot. If it
doesn't work out, I have something
else to fall back on."
Samson played and scored in all
40 of his career games in four sea-
sons at Penn. He scored 238 points
and set nine school records. He's the
11th highest scorer in Ivy League
history and a three-time All-Ivy
League selection; and he was an
Associated Press third-team All-
American in 2008.
Samson was a four-year starter at
sweeper for the Andover boys soccer
team, earning All-State honorable
mention honors as a junior.
He played a major role in the
program's dramatic resurgence. The
Barons were 6-30-6 when Samson
was a freshman and sophomore, and
31-7-7 when he was a junior and
senior.
He was a 3.95 GPA student at
Andover who scored 30 of 36 on the
ACT. He said he chose Penn for its
academics, and playing football was a
bonus. Fl
