The award was presented at the agency's "Celebrating Harmony" event in Ann Arbor. "We chose this theme of celebrating harmony because the services that JFS provides to the individuals and families in our community [programs for older adults, employment services, resettlement and emergency assistance] fulfill essential needs in the community and are intended to create harmony — that is, to create a sense of balance and peace for people who are facing discord in their lives',' says Phyllis Herzig, JFS board president. "Another reason for the theme is more literal — our honorees, Barb and Barry — highlight the importance of tikkun olam [repairing the world] and demon- strate how much difference each one of us can make by doing whatever we can to repair the world. They are excellent examples of how we can live our lives har- moniously by giving to others." Barry Nemon and Barbara Stark- Nemon are first-generation Americans; three of their parents escaped Nazi Germany rule in Europe. Barry grew up in Detroit and has been director of Emergency Services at Chelsea Hospital for 25 years. He has volunteered as a doc- tor at Tamarack Camps in Ortonville, where many generations of Nemon family members have been campers and staff j JFS board president Phyllis Herzig with honorees Barbara Stark-Nemon and Dr. Barry Nemon members. Barbara Stark-Nemon also grew up in Detroit and worked for 33 years as an English teacher, speech-language therapist and university instructor before retiring in 2006 to begin a promising second career writing fiction. She has guided the JFS strategic planning process since 2001. She currently serves as vice president for com- munity relations and development. University of Michigan Musical Society president and past Bernstein Award recip- ient Ken Fischer was emcee. "At Barbara and Barry's request, pro- ceeds from the event will support the JFS Emergency Aid Fund," says Anya Abramzon, executive director. "The fund supports the critical work JFS does serv- ing thousands of individuals facing life challenges in our community, including job loss, medical expenses, food and shel- ter issues and more. It was established by 2008 Bernstein Leadership Award recipi- ents, Rachel Bendit and Mark Bernstein and has been an invaluable resource for the community these past few years." f you are not wearing ... sell or BORROW on it!
