How to Send Letters

DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

We prefer letters relating to JN articles. We
reserve the right to edit or reject letters.
Letters of 225 words or less are considered
first. Longer ones will be subject to trimming.
Letter writers are limited in frequency of pub-
lication. Letters must be original and contain
the name, address and title of the writer and a
day phone number. Non-electronic copies must
be hand signed. Send letters to the JN: 29200
Northwestern Highway, Suite 110, Southfield, MI
48034; fax (248) 304-8885; e-mail, letters@the
jewishnews.com . We prefer e-mail.

Stop The Glocks
I don't believe the tea party was
responsible for the violence of one
angry, psychotic loner shooting U.S.
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, killing six
others and wounding many more
("Fevered Rhetoric Heightened
Political Tensions," Jan. 13, page 13).
Yet the politicians who let the assault
weapon ban lapse in 2004, afraid
to tick off gun-lover voters and the
National Rifle Association, have to
take some responsibility.
Any anti-Semitic person or anti-
government neophyte can drop by his
local gunstore and pick up a Glock
semiautomatic pistol. Then he is able
to fire 33 rounds without reloading,
just like Rep. Giffords' shooter, Jared
Loughner, and the Virginia Tech shooter.
The day after the shootings, the
sales of $499 Glock pistols doubled in
Glockmeister stores in Mesa and Phoenix,
Ariz. Gun lovers were stocking up, just
in case these "weapons of mass destruc-
tion" might be made illegal again.
In this era of political fury and
weapons available like butter from a
grocery store, I don't know whom to
fear more: the gun enthusiast ticked
off by Israel and Jews or Islamic ter-
rorists hiding bombs.
Gabby Giffords was not just "hei-
mishe" ("So Heimishe," Jan. 13, page
13) but a courageous congresswoman
who spoke her mind and voted her
conscience. I now hope that her fel-
low congressmen follow her lead and
stand up for the right thing:
Once and for all, stop the Glocks.
